Hello everyone, my name is Mike and I am currently looking for a specific kind of knife. I have been reading around and browsing the picture threads and I still can't hammer down the exact kind of knife to fit my needs. I am active duty military and I am looking for a quality fixed blade knife that I will most likely mount across my lower back on my belt for right handed use. I would like to find a blade that is no more than 4 inches long, because I really don't want to strap a 10 inch long piece of metal on my lower back. I really don't need anything that has that "tactical" look, I would prefer a more traditional blade and handle of wood or even bone. My price range is really around 300 and is flexible depending on the quality of the product. Is there anything that springs to mind for you guys?

Thank you for taking time to read this, and I do appreciate the replies.

Mike

Welcome to the forums, and thanks for you service. For 300, you could probably get a knife from someone in our makers forum.

How about the Nyala by CRK, or one of the many offerings by Survive Knives?

Remember that a SOB horizontal carry pretty much limits your access to one hand or the other, but not either hand. That may not be a concern for you, but it's something to think about. For your specific carry requirements, you're going to have to be as concerned about the sheath as about the knife. You'll need something that carries in a kydex-type sheath with horizontal mounting options. You could buy the knife first and then have a custom sheath made, but that would mean more time without the knife while the sheath is being made.

For production knives, Bob Dozier does some stuff that's pretty close to what you want. So does ESEE and Becker. Survive Knives are popular, but I have no personal experience with them. Like pvicenzi said, there are quite a few custom makers on BF that can fill your requirements to your exact specs. If you don't need something tomorrow, that's probably your best choice.

As others have said, have a look at the member knife makers and sheath makers.
Esee and Swamp Rat are often recommended as well.
Daniel Winkler' s work may also nail it for you and his knives and tomahawks seem to be very highly regarded.

Oh man! Thank you everyone for the quick and very accurate responses… The ones that really caught my eye are the Daniel Winkler knives. man those are nice.

Winkler II (order direct and he offeres a Mil discount) or Rock River Ironworks "Hunter" from Steve Woods.

Steve runs a small shop and is quite busy. I suggested the "Hunter" as it's in the size range you mentioned and it's tough! He runs a no frills website so if you have any questions ring him up or email.

Here's my Hunter that I had Cerakoted black next to my RMJ Feather as a comparison in size.
