So i am new to knives in the sense of never having purchased one before that wasnt for the kitchen. I have a hankering for a bowie knife, being from Texas and all. Is there anything of quality(doesnt have to be the uber best) for under 50? i know exactly what style i would like, but i dont want to buy something that is going to fall apart. i have been researching via google, and it seems like everytime i find something out, i have another question. this will mainly be a around the house, and when i go hunting knife, and a just because i want it. i would like for it to look something like this:

thanks for all the help guys, and hello to all.

Do you have a size prefference?

It is going to be pretty tough to find a decent traditionally styled large bowie for under $50. Maybe look for the Western bowie if they are still being sold.

There are some great Bowies that can be had for just over $100, but in the low price range you asking for I guess I would suggest checking out Atlanta Cutlery. They have some good looking usable bowies for great prices, but they are not top quality when it comes to fit, finish, and heat treat.

In my opinion, you may want to spend a bit more than $50, if you are going to get a knife to actually use. That's not to say that the knife you are looking for isn't available for that price, just that you can get something much better for a little more. Here's a starting point. Check out the Bear and Son knives, for decent steel and good construction, SOG has great knives, the Hen and Rooster are passable, Cold Steel has some excellent bowies, Case will work. http://www.knifeoutlet.com/shop/10Browse.asp?Search=bowie

Of course, these are just my opinions, and a starting point. Stick around, search, and listen, and the kind folks on this site will educate you beyond your expectation. Just be careful, or you'll end up spending all of your disposable income on knives, before you know it.;)

Welcome!

I have that S&W and don't think it would stand up to much heavy use. I got it cheap and it's nice to look at or fool around with, but that's about it. Look at the BK-7 or BK-9.

You could try a Buck 119, it's a bit small but it's definately one of the best, and for right aound $50 in most places.

Also the Kabar hunters aren't bad knives and they have a bowie that runs around that price.

If you're looking for something larger, I bought one of the Winchester Bowies as a loaner, I was surprised at how well it performed. I beat the living crap out of it and all that happened was that the cross guard got a bit loose. I keep it in the bottom of my tool box for work. They run about $25.
