First of all, I've been perusing the forum for a short while and have learned a lot. I just signed up today and hope to learn more. I've owned several Buck Knives as my Dad was always a fan and that's what he gave us boys. I'm finding myself wanting to start collecting them.

Anyway, I got one today that I bought from a friend. It's a 501 Esquire, in the box, with the script Buck on the blade. I bought it because $30 sounded like a good price. I did not realize it was as old as it is or in the shape it's in. Not sure it has seen much daylight, if any. I now think I got a rather solid deal.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Buck forum.
An English script Squire in 'as new' condition with original box is most certainly worth $30.
Congrats on a good deal.
Do you have the ability to post a picture of the knife and box?

Anyway, the English Script blade stamp was on the first two variations of the Squire. So next question is what type of handle material is on the knife. Here are some comments I made on another thread about the Squire.
The smaller Knife is a Buck Squire or Esquire in the early versions which you happen to have. The handles look like maroon micarta. That and the English Script stamp indicate late 70's production. It has a 440c if it's micarta. If the handle material is wood, its early 80's production and 425M steel.

Casey,

Welcome to the forum:thumbup: Thats a great deal IMHO, it'd be hard to get a new 2010 for that price let alone a real vintage knife. Good job and like Flat says, post some pics if at all possible:D

I'm still learning so my input isn't really worth much, but WELCOME
to the forum. I'd say about any BUCK is worth 30 dollars!!
Regards Sonny

Pics? I can do that. I have no idea who Uncle John is.

Now you tell Me... ITE ... LOL ...

Welcome to the Buck Forum.Chaos....

Chaos nice looking 501, it reminds me of my first one. When I bought it the salesman said I had a choice, either with or without a sheath. They had just started putting a sheath with them, and he had some of the older ones still in stock. I am still kicking my self for not buying both styles, still carry that 501 at times in its sheath. HL

That knife just sucks, it's too nice to use! :p Now you have to go out and get a Vantage or something so you can keep that one in the safe. That's the problem with nice vintage knives with the box, even if they are inexpensive I still can't bring myself to use them.

Uh, Oh,, Do you guys think I should invite Casey over here? :D:D

Are you easily addicted Casey?:D

Like these guys say... Buck knives can be addicting. So if ya get hooked, I can help with the local Buckanon meetings. I'm just down the road from ya as far West as you can get and still stay in 77338.

Welcome to the Buck forum, neighbor.

Welcome to the Buck forum, neighbor.

I'm a 77346er, actually. Atascocita.

Thanks, neighbor!!

You have the second version of the earlier model. The first version came out with mircarta handle scales and later changed to Birch, in addition the rocker pin(the big pin that retains the locking mechinism) was removed. Very nice knife esp for 30.00
