Just found this site and I must say getting registered was a bit of a chore but here I am finally with about 40 questions but for now only one and that is where is a good place to find a good used knife in particular a open stock 97uh jpg?

Welcome to the forum! You will find this is a great place now that you have made your way in. There is some absolutely incredible information to be found in and around here, and one of the best places is Larry's web site. I've attached a link to the it for you.

Usually, the place to find used knives is ebay. The 97UH creeps up on there from time to time, although it's not really all that common a knife. You may have a bit better luck finding it's Old Timer counterpart, the 97OT.

Dave

Thats kind of what I am seeing but from the limited reading I have done E-bay seems awful high on a lot of knives I don't have a big collection but kind of started on a whim but I think I might have gotten hoaxed all ready I have a 171 uh with a bare tang no numbers nothing

Are you looking for the 4 1/4" trapper with Staglon scales? Dave describes it, and it is a 97OT, for some reason. Should be a 97UH or 194UH maybe. There is no 97UH to my knowledge. There is a 197UH, which is a single blade serpentine with a liner locking blade.

Welcome to BladeForums.

In the pictures and listings referenced above it is listed under Open stock/sch 97uh it is a 2 blade knife one regular blade the other a liner locking saw it of course has the staglon handle which for some reason I like

One of the other things I don't understand is why some Mdl 171's have serial numbers and some, mine in particular doesn't just a plain tang not even an Uncle henry on it is the number something that increases the value or does it matter the knife in particular is just a user it is sound but nothing to shout about

The 97OT is a liner lock Buzz Saw Trapper with a pick and tweezers, and there were a few of them with Uncle Henry Handles. There must have been quite a few 97OT blades left over, because it shows up in several different handle configurations. I'd like to have one with a saw blade too. Rusty has a great picture of one in this thread.

If someone has a blade stamped 97UH, could they show it?

No tang stamp at all indicates a factory second usually. With Schrade there are always a lot of variations.

Found the reference!!!

I hate to bring it up, but Taylor, the owner of the Schrade name, is importing 171 Uh knives from China, which may not have tang stamps. I don't know for sure. I heard a rumor once that some of his knives early on had paper stickers on them which said China, that you could just scratch off, and no stamp anywhere on the knife. Others have a china stamp that is very very small. I have three that are the real deal, one with the bird's head pommel, and another witha serial # under 300. I am considering parting with many of my Schrade fixed blade knives if the market comes back. I think Schrade prices have fallen off this year because of the market. I also notice that a lot of the nicer stuff is spread a lot thinner than it was even a year ago.

Everyone keeps saying prices have fallen off but everything I bid on seems to be plenty expensive especially that last 10 minutes Ha! It almost always seems to be someone who hasn't been in the bidding process that jumps in at the last minute and runs the price up my 171 uh has the blade stamped USA and such but the brass guard doesn't have anything on it and doesn't seem to be cast no uncle henry or serial number the blade is plenty hard and holds a nice edge

Love it or hate it, sites like eBay allow us to reach into the past and pull out plums no matter how far removed the buyer and seller. This "time machine" effect is definitely part of what I love the most about this past-time. We live in an age where it's easy to take for granted the ease at which we can browse a 1983 Schrade catalogue on the fantastic site www.collectors-of-schrades-r.us , pick out something that hasn't been made in 25 years, go to eBay and have a new-in-the-box example delivered a week or two later as if through a time-portal. This seems to me unprecedented in the history of collecting in general. Anything for a price... as far as the prices go my experience is sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't. It just depends who you are bidding against and if the guy with the "deep-pockets" got his the last auction and so the pressures off on that pattern for a while. I have paid what I see as a little more than I should have sometimes to get it Now! lol and lucked out on others. Time will tell what values do but I suspect they will go up and down a little depending on economy etc with an overall trend long term raise say 20 years from now. Mint Schrades from the 50's go for large $$$ now. I see 70's and 80's Schrades as a good deal as far as not depreciating and can be purchased now at good prices if you are patient, which I'm often not lol Addictive as hell but you aren't throwing money away either I don't think.

......there are rapid movers..that continue to appreciate against trends because of the associated name with Schrade...I just sold a Schrade Loveless MIB for Au$900 = US$720 which I originally paid US $100...came from New York to Australia and now gone back to New York....I still have very low mintage #100 odd absolute MIB which I will keep for my collection....my aim is to have a single MIB with paperwork of each Schrade example and clear all the multiples....and regain the use of my home instead of sleeping in a knife sheath...Hoo Roo

Just a recent auction for reference, value is subjective kinda thing. I personally have little interest in the Loveless so to me it's still worth 100 bucks if I can find one for that but no more. Other than the cool rivets used I find it kind of unattractive but that's just me. Larry your collection is awe inspiring. Your stated one-of-everything goal would sound unachievable for most but I have no doubt you will achieve it if anyone can. I try to keep my collection focused or I end up wanting every knife I see and forego food buying so for me it's all about what I like to see on display in my home day-in and day-out. That has meant a collection showcasing all the "Bear Paws" that I can get starting with one of everything ever offered in catalogues and expanding into SFOs from there. Less lofty goal but fun none-the-less.
