I've lurked and read BladeForums for the past year or so and I've finally decided to say "hi".
I'm a father of two from Canada who got his first pocket knife (a little promotional Swiss Army) from my grandfather at the age of about 8 (now 40!). I've always had a SA or some other little folder and I've had a blue-handled Officier Suisse for about 20 years that has travelled with me through living in three different countries-the bottle opener and corkscrew have served me well, indeed.
Recently, I was caught the bug a little bit and picked up a few Case Small Stockman knives (grey bone, red bone and black G10). Then I started reading about other knives and picked up a Buck 110, 112 and 55, then a Buck 112 Ecolite. I carried the 55 mostly as my EDC for the past year, but then got the urge to try something new, so I ended up with a little Al Mar Hawk Ultralite (which is really nice, though I find it a bit small), then a Sanrenmu 710 and just recently snagged a Benchmade 707, which is really impressive to me. I am now embarking on a bit of a mission to learn to properly hone knives (I shave with and hone my own straight razors, but knife sharpening is quite a different ballgame!).
Anyway, I just wanted to check in and say how much I appreciate the community and the vast store of knowledge and advice here. I've learned more than I'll probably ever need to know about steel and knives and other things, but in the end, I still know very little, so I hope to continue to learn and pick up new knowledge. I plan to get into sharpening since I now have a bit of a knife collection and the little V-sharpener I picked up at Mountain Equipment Co-op isn't getting the job done.
