Hey guys, I'm making my first knife from an old saw blade and hit a snag...I was hand filling my primary bevels with the T shape jig, the first side went great, clean line and smooth (ish). When I flipped the knife and started on the other side I couldn't get a clean line and it is VERY rough...so rough it looks more like a serrated blade. What am I doing wrong?

Some file can do that , it happens to me to ..............Try with other brand file if you have .
You get very deep scratches like this , right ?

I would bet that you are filing at an angle that is taking the edge to zero. When doing the other side yo are chipping off pieces of the very thin edge. Just finish the bevel on the second side and then file the edge back clean so it is about .050" thick. On future builds, lower the angle of the file guide arm so you don't take too much off the edge.

This is only one of the reasons I don't like file jigs.
 
Perhaps the edge is flexing away from the file.

Look up the Green Pete, Fleming, Aaron Gough filing jigs.

they keep the file angle and pressure consistant. They support the material.
 
I still read/understand his post as he has problem with rough bevel not with edge ?

It was both the edge and bevel, last night I spent 3 hours with a less aggressive single cut file and was able to get it taken care of. Now time to sand...thanks for the help
