...watch out, I'm on a roll. Couple of finish questions.

First, how does a satin finish hold up to a kydex sheath? I read someplace on the forum that Satin and kydex is a no go. I assume this is because that kydex will put small scratches on the finsih, which cannot be removed unless you polish the blade. This will made the blade gloss and not satin, not a good idea. Maybe a tumbled finsih would be a good idea.

Second, the crinkle coating. How does that handle use. Anything from cutting paper/food or soft items to hard more abrasive items such as wood, cardboard, thin steel (if I need to), etc. The only coated blade I have used are the Benchmade teflon and newer ceramic coats.

Thanks.

In some cases the crinkle coating will chip off, particularly near the tip on the spine. Through normal use the coating should wear down from a crinkle finish to a smoothed finish, and will slowly come off from hard use. Some of the colors (e.g. black) seem more crinkly than others (OD).

I can't help ya regarding satin and kydex...because I use leather. :D

The top knife here has spent years in a kydex sheath (with me and the prior owner) The bottom knife same story but in leather. I don't see any difference and they both still look good.

So the crinkle does wear down some what like the ceramic coating on the BMs. Not that this is a problem. I was just wondering if the crinkle is bulletproof like the INFI.

hmm... so the satin doesn't get the glossy spots from the kydex like a pistol finsih would. Interesting. Frankly, it probably doesn't matter...this stuff is made to be used.

It does but the kydex mostly hits the edges and when you use the knife (these two are users) the use gets rid of the polishing.

Okay, that makes sense. The only thing I can compare this to is the tumbled finsih on a Sebenza and the coating on the Benchmades.

Tony,

The scales on those three knives... I'm thinking Micarta in Tiger, then Black, then Snakeskin, is that right?

Did you oil or smooth them at all? The reason I ask is because they are really rich in color.

A caveat to consider is how the different kydex benders design their sheaths. Some use a handle retention, while others friction fit the blades. The latter will obviously tend to make marks more than the former.

One of the touted advantages of the DCBB finish is the ability to "freshen it up" with a quick bead blast.
