Hi to everyone. I am new to the forum and it is great... Compared to most on here I probably have a small collection of knives. So far , Benchmades,
Case, Cold Steel (early and new), and a few Kershaw and Gerbers. In all fairness, the only knives I have used hard are the Benchmades and they are great.. Looking to get something a little different and have been looking at the Spydercos. I have read good things on here about them and just wondered how they hold up under hard use ? I don't know anything about VG-10 steel. Does it hold a good edge and how is it to sharpen ? Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

I'm sure not the steel expert. I just happen to still be awake.;) .

VG-10 is one of my favorite steels. It's in the upper level of quality. It doesn't hold an edge as well as S30V or 154CM but it's easier to sharpen then either of those steels and also costs less. It's a fine steel and you will be very happy with anything you purchase that is made from it.

Regards

Thanks for the input. These forums are great for people that can't sleep lol

I don't want you to think I'm trying to chase you out of this forum......but you might want to go over to the the Spyderco sub-forum here on Bladeforums where are discussed all things Spyderco. While dedicated to "Spydies", the posts there are remarkably candid, and whether you want to research a particular model ( I find the "search" feature to be invaluable.....unlike other forums I visit, our "search function" is quick and efficient ! ), or just want to get a sense of what Spyderco is all about, its a good place to begin.
Incidentally VG-10 has a great repuation.....and Spyderco knives...I think it's universally agreed...are terrific knives.

I think spyderco is actually ancient aztec for 'hard use'. Seriously, these things are built like tanks and half the price of anything that comes close to it. I think VG-10 is easier to sharpen the s30v while holding an excellent edge, but if you search I'm sure you'll find something. Spyderco's business model is also something to admire when looking at Spyderco, from posts i've read and stories I've heard Sal and the spyderco team are really truly actually good guys looking to give great quality knives for great prices...pick up a Native I or III to see what I'm talking about, super efficient designs and you can't beat their value.

(I'm on the fence about bm vs. spyderco of late, originally I was all BM but I'm learning...)

good morning from KSU,

Thanks Gramps. I have been to the Spyderco forum , but being new here, I thought maybe if I put in general, I would get more response. Matter of fact I just read the thread about you and the endura 4. Gotta say thats quite an offer for a company president to make, just to make sure that you are happy as a customer.

Thanks phil. I too have tended to lean towards BM, but I'm learning that there other great products available. From what I've read you are right, the people at Spyderco are truly interested in what the customers think and try to make sure they are happy.

Spyderco's are excellent knives. You can get them in a variety of steels; H-1 (doesn't rust), S30V, VG-10. They are made very, very well. And Spyderco DOES stand behind their products! They also LISTEN to what their customers want.

I'm a big, big fan of Spyderco. Like many others, I used to be all about Benchmade, but have converted almost completely to a Spyderco guy. The more I hear about Benchmade as a company, the less I like. I won't trash Benchmade here, I still think they make pretty good knives, but Spyderco is better. As mentioned above, the folks at Spyderco are really great people. I have had several of them email me personally about questions or concerns I have raised on the forums. Sal himself included! They are very much in tune with and responsive to their end-line users (you and me), and they are dedicated to putting out the very best designed and hardest working products possible.

If you are looking for a really good Spyderco, a Manix would be my first suggestion (that's my favorite). Right now, people are all crazy about the Caly 3, and the Endura and Delica 4 models are very, very good as well. But honestly, it's pretty hard to go wrong with anything they make. For mid-market production knives, they are the kings. Actually, for lower market, budget knives, they are the kings as well. Their Byrd line is almost unbelievably good. But I'm sure even a cursory glance into the Spyderco forum would tell you pretty much everything I've just said.

Hope to see you there.

I also reccomend hunting the exchange and you'll get an even more amazing deal on amazing knives...you'll get super cheap delicas and enduras for one thing...

I was into knives many years ago, but never really got into quality knives until recently (plus, I got out of it for many years). When I started researching brands, Spyderco popped out immediately due to a combo of the great reviews they always get, their amazingly low price, and the great steels they use. For the price, you won't find a folder that uses as good blade steel. The action if every Spyderco I've handled is smooth and lockup is always solid (tho, there's been threads recently of some lockbacks giving under spine whacks). I have the Delica4 and NativeI and think both are the best values in the $40 range folders. The Native doesn't have steel liners so the handles can flex a bit, but no biggy. The FRN is a bit cheap feeling, but grippy none-the-less. You give up some in the handle for the great VG-10 and S30V blade steel. Overall, Spyderco as a company, IMO, offers the best combination of quality of materials and price.
I do like Benchmade and Kershaw, as well as a few other brands and prefer thumbstuds over holes, but that doesn't negate the value that most Spydercos offer. I also prefer the styling of most other brands (I think most spydies are ugly personally), but again, that doesn't detract from the value they offer. If you like the aesthetics or don't care about aesthetics, and don't mind or like thumbholes, then no problems there. I have enough knives that I'm now pickier about appearance, but I'll still recommend Spydercos to anyone looking for the best value for the price.

I definitely was with you on the ugly spydies, but they grow on you, pretty fast. They look less like fighting knives and more like tools which is perfectly OK with me so as not to scare the sheeple and to make the blade look smaller (we have a 3" restriction @ KSU).

I think it is time to try out the Spydercos. Guess I'll have to spend a little time hangin out on their forum...
