Hello all,
Just wanted to take a moment to drop in here and introduce myself. I'm new to this whole knife thing and just got my first "Traditional" folder today. It's a shiny new GEC Farmer Lock with Nifebrite Acrylic Handle. Previously, I've dabbled with knives and sort of fallen in and out of collecting. I've been carrying a Kershaw Ken Onion for a while and it's been a great daily knife, but my local ACE hardware carries a nice selection of Case and Buck knives and I always find myself drifting over there to ogle them while my wife is looking at, well, whatever wives look at while browsing ACE hardware (plants and garden trinkets and things, I suppose).

Anyway... I recently had some store credit at (non BF dealer member) (great site, but it's pricey) and they had the GEC on there for a reasonable price. Lucky for me, it was almost to the penny what I had to spend. So I did. And boy, am I glad I did! It's a beautiful knife and I can't get over the packaging. They definitely did it right with this one in the packaging department (I'm a graphic designer and photographer so these things really excite me). I liked it so much that I picked up a Buck 112 Ecolite. My very first knife was a Buck Mini Lockback (lost to the swampy woods of Ravenel, South Carolina many years ago) and I'm looking forward to owning another Buck. I know a lot of guys around here have mixed feelings about the Ecolite handles, but I'm a skinny jeans guy and I think I'll like the lighter weight. I'm looking forward to comparing it to other knives I've had over the years. My wife gave me a little Browning twin-blade knife for our first anniversary last year and I carried a CRKT Ignitor for a while, too. My daily carry and very favorite, though, has been my Kershaw Ken Onion in Stainless. It's slim, pocket-friendly and has held a great edge. It's been with me daily for several months now and has taken an absolute beating.

I'm looking forward to adding the Buck and GEC to the rotation, though for a little more traditional "knifing". Anyway... You guys probably don't care about my knives, right? :D

How about me? Well... Since you asked, I'm new here and looking to learn a lot about knives, blade shape, maintenance, etc. Hoping to share a little knowledge, too. One of the things I enjoy doing is video reviews and I plan to do some knife reviews soon. I'm a graphic designer and photographer (as I said before) and love the outdoors. I'm a bit of a gun enthusiast and really enjoy hanging out at the family farm with my little 10/22 and a pocket full of bullets. I also collect fountain pens and I'm a pretty avid member over at The Fountain Pen Network. If you're into stationery and pens and what not, head over there and visit us.

Feel free to PM or email me with questions or whatever. I'm always interested in chatting.

Kind regards,
Matthew

Welcome aboard Matthew. Glad you're enjoying your new Farmer (I have a Kershaw/Ken Onion also and it's a fantastic knife). I've really fallen in love with traditional knives since about June of this year when I was surfing around the forum. I'd spent lots of time at the Becker forum and stumbled upon the stunning beauty of GEC's folders. I became fascinated by them and in no time had the first (of what is now 8 of them) one - my #55, in my hand. This only fueled my admiration of them once I got a first-hand experience with this gorgeous traditional. Several more GEC's have since followed and I love them all for both their incredible quality and functionality.

I'm 50 yrs old, so I remember these knives when that's what everyone carried and any self-respecting male over the age of about 10 carried a pocket knife of some sort. Mine first was a Cub Scout knife in about 1972. I remember proudly carrying it to school every day (on a clip on my belt where it hung from it's bail) if you can imagine that!

We're a visual crowd here, so pics will be mandatory "or it didn't happen!"... :)

Pipe in anytime and surf the traditional forum and you'll learn TONS about these wonderful tools we call traditional pocket knives. :)

A pocket-dump pic from about a month ago... My two favorite pocket knives that see the most ECD time... A #06 Pemberton and a #55 Houndstooth in Autumn Gold bone.

Welcome to the forums, I think you will enjoy your stay. I look forward to seeing some pictures of your new companion. Like yourself, I am a big fan of gec and almost always have my favorite scagel made by gec in my pocket. Great knife! :)

Hi Matthew....welcome to the forum.
When you're ready to buy a few more, don't forget to check the Exchange forum. There are always good deals popping up and quite a few "experienced" GEC's for sale.
It's also a good way to keep the knives within the "family". ;)

I bet that in 1880 that Morgan would have traded for a good knife...

Thanks for the warm welcome all! I'm on a budget until after Christmas, but I'm sure I'll have a little spending cash to blow so I'll definitely check out the Marketplace here. I could always use a nice, well-loved knife with some "experience" on its edge. :)

Well... Here she is. Nothing too special as far as photos go, but it gives you a good look at the knife. Loving it so far!!!

Welcome aboard! That's a nice one, a very useful pattern. Quite robust, yet small enough to be watch-pocket... er, barlow pocket-friendly.
