I just purchased a SOG mini trident. I like everything about it except the blade side to side play.
Can someone recommend a knife with the following features....
tanto blade, assisted open, deep carry pocket clip good quality and made in USA.
I was going to get the full size trident until I felt the blade play in the mini.
thanks

Good call, my full size Trident has quite a bit of blade play.

.

Benchmade Barrage 583 (Tanto style). If your want a deeper carry clip, there's plenty third party ones available.

Can someone tell me what bit tip it takes to tighten up the screws in the trident mini?
I thought I would try that.

The Trident and other SOG A/Os have blade play problems.
The non A/O SOG Seki folders wth arc-lock will open faster and smoother than many A/Os.
My favorite A/O is the Kershaw Blur, very fast, very solid, zeroblade play.
Comes in Tanto blade as well,

You will need some Torx drivers. I don't know what size the Trident Mini uses, but my SOG Flash 1 uses a T6 and Flash 2 uses a T8. I'd guess the Trident Mini is closer in size to the Flash 1. I've never been able to get all the side-to-side play out of the SOGs though, as I think that is a side effect of how they implement their assisted opening. Also, the linerless FRN handles will flex a bit more, so you will be able to force a little bit of side-to-side movement, even with the pivot adjusted optimally. It isn't a functional problem (lockup is still secure), but it does bug some people.

There are many knives that would be great alternatives to your SOG, but are missing one requirement or another. If you want a USA-made assisted-opening tanto, the Kershaw Blur tanto meets those criteria. If you skip the A/O requirement, a Hogue EX-series tanto will treat you right.

My SOG Vulcan is not assisted and has no blade play, but it's not the tanto version, although I would expect comparable quality from the tanto.

Hi Dours -

This suggestion does not come with a deep carry clip, but I think that would be easily remedied -

Check out the Blur tanto blemish from Kershawguy -

You can't beat that price, and for a good beater knife you'll be pleased.

Also - if you check out the Kershaw site - you can filter to see only assisted opening with deep carry clip - then you can check out what tanto's get your interest

If you're willing to give up on the the assisted knives you'll have a lot more options. A flipper with a strong detent will pop open as fast if not faster. even a thumb hole or thumb stud can be opened very quickly with a little practice.

thanks for the advice. I picked up a torx set at my local hardware store and was able to get the play out of the blade enough to suit me.

I really appreciate all the advice.
