I resently purchased my first (of many, i'm sure) Khukuri from Uncle Bill just last week. I opted for the BirGorkha Villager model because i USE my knive quite heavily when i go camping. Plus, I'm still just a poor college kid so the more expensive Khuks are going to have to wait until next year when i hit th "real world". I'm sorry to say it, but i've been a long time lurker in this forum and have just now gotten the nerve to actually converse with all of you.
Ok, here's my question:
the villager model i just recieved from Uncle Bill has a line or a crack or something on the spine that starts about 1/2 inch from the bolster, runs about 1/4 of an inch along the spines edge, then cuts at an angle and runs another 3/8" or so to the center of the spine. Is this something i should worry about?? I'm one of those guys that if i even have a doubt that my knife might not hold up i lose sleep at night. What can you all tell me about this line? I don't in anyway fault my khuk. Uncle Bill was right when he said it was built to last 100 years. i'm just curious.

thanx fellas!

Use the knife and don't worry about it. Should last 100 years.

Forgot my manners. Welcome to the cantina.

Thank you Uncle Bill. You're input is all i need to rest assured.

I doubt if Uncle would have put the knife in the mail if he thought there was a possibility of it comeing apart. It sounds like where Sher or Kumar stoped the steel from folding. I wouldn't be afraid to use anything either of those kami's made.:)

Welcome aboard!

Sounds like a surface blemish from the forging process. Probably not a big deal, just character.

Edit:

Opps! I missed the part about experts. I'm not an expert, I just play one in real life!

I figured it was nothing more than cosmetic. I don't doubt the toughness of this balde in any way shape or form and I know that from dealing with Uncle Bill that he wouldn't ship anything that might no hold up to the famed HI quality. I was just really curious to what you guys thought about it. I agree, it does give the knife character

to the Cantina. I think all of use lurked here before posting.

The forge flaw (if that's what it is) being on the softer spine is no prob. If it was like that on the cutting edge, that'd be different. Most likely it is just a mark from the quick finishing that the villagers get. my sanu villlager ha similar marks. if it were polished up and finished (which often doubles the price), it would've been taken out.

Thanx for the kind welcome. I have to admit I do feel a little more involved now that i'm actually interacting with you all instead of just sneaking around and hording your information. I have to say that it was this forum that inspired me to buy my khuk. You all just seem like a good bunch of guys and it's an honor to post my thoughts. I just blued the blade of the khuk this afternoon and oiled the wood of the handle. Looks great. anybody have any more modifications that would make a villager remain utilitarian, but still show that i love this knife?

The only thing I can think of now is to:
Use it. And remember where the scratches came from so you can regale yor friends with your exploits.
They seem to grow with the telling.:p

Trust me, I plan on using it. Taking 'er for a little test run next weekend in the Smokey Mtns. Should be lots of fun;)

Take it to the mountains and ABUSE it! Whap the side of the blade up flat against a tree - HARD! Then the other side. When you are wore out and it ain't even breathing hard, set it aside, pretty it up shiny and nice, and then use it. If it don't break the first time when you are trying to break it, you'll feel much better.

Yep.

I agree. The more you bash your first khuk the more you will appreciate it. It's always nice to have a user khuk and one just for looking at. :D

I agree fellas. i keep telling myself that "i'll only use this one for camping then when i get my 20" AK (when i get back my tax return) i'll keep it just for show." now i KNOW this will never happen. the first day i get the thing i'll go out and clear a field with it;). And as far as using the villager hard, trust me, i will! you're talkin to the guy that managed to break a trailmaster in two days!! got my money back on that one.

thanx;)

Welcome here Jake! Go forth and bless that vegitation with your khuk....... Sorry, I'm just an acolyte from my church.....10 years of faithful sevice and that's it!?:D :p Actually, I've been able to do that since 1996, but I've now got a certificate.

Seriously, have fun with it, and remember, as with most people on this board, it started with one....more will follow...;)

Welcome aboard, Jake! Enjoy your new compulsion/obsession. :D

P.S. My 20" AK splits seasoned logs like they're styrofoam. You just GOTTA use it!!
