the last time i was up at Delbert Ealy's shop, we forged out a hammer head. After it sat around in my shop for 2 months...I decided to actually make a functioning tool out of it. I ground the face flat up to an A45 finish, So is the main areas of the body. I made the handle out of some nicely grained Honey Locust...not like i have a shortage of that stuff. The piece of steel used is 4140, heated to 1500 then quenched in AAA Quenchant and draw tempered to what i believe is about 52rc. Handle is sanded to a 400 grit finish and coated with several coats of Tung oil and leather dye.
Anywhoo

Sorry about the level of dirt covering me....Cleanout day in the shop.

Nice, that is a good looking hammer. Cool to see it finished up!

Very nice hammer Mike, did you turn the honey locust on a Lathe?

Feels good to have it ready! Ryan, i did the whole handle on my KMG. I don't have a wood lathe....yet :) Forgot to add...She is a beast, tipping the scales at almost 5lbs on the dot. Shouldn't have any issues moving steel with it :)

Thanks guys

Mike
