new handle for cleaver

My wife's grandfather was a Polish butcher who loved his two cleavers. Both have extensive hammer marks from being driven through joints and bones for years. The handle of one is broken. The brass pegs are still intact, but the wood is cracked and about half of one side is missing. My brother in law would like a new handle for the knife. This blade will be a bitch to ship out. It must weigh about 15 pounds, but I am willing to send it to someone who can put a nice handle on it. Walnut or cocobolo or something that looks good with brass and tarnished steel.

Can anyone recommend someone for this work?

Thanks,
Matt

Matt,

There is a cutlery outfit in Seattle WA called Epicurean Edge.

There's a gentleman there called Daniel O'Malley and he does custom handles on kitchen knives.

Here's an example of his work on a chefs knife in Koa Wood.

Also, here's some work he did on an old style butcher cleaver (like yours). I think it was a family treasure as well...

You can probably contact Dan at omalley@bladegallery.com or through the company website epicureanedge.com

Good luck.
