Hello my fellow knives aficionados

It looks like i will be rehandling the both knives as they both developed the same issue of a bit of a wiggle.

Looking for any ideas/tutorials of how I can do it myself. Any advice much appreciated.

Regards

What do you mean, a "wiggle"? Both have Kraton/"Kray-Ex" grips, the same stuff as on Benchmade's Puukko 200 and Leuko 202, which they call Santoprene. They likely would be difficult to re-handle.

Apologies for not being precise...the blades have a bit of play and they move up and down....i am thinking of ultimately removing kraton and having wood/leather/stag handle instead.

Well there are 3 basic ways I have done for stick tang knives

1. Make a slip-on bolster and glue in place, then take a piece of material for the rest of the handle, figure out where to drill the pin hole if there is one - or you can cut notches in the sides of the tang for pins if you want - then drill the hole for the tang to slip into the handle, then glue/pin in place, then shape handle.

If you were going to use leather washers you would want solid slip-on bolster and butt/pommel to hold them in place. I am not sure but I think for leather washers you want to hammer the leather pieces flat and dense before cutting the holes in them to slip over the tang. Then glue them in place and put the pommel on, then shape the handle.

2. Mortise out a space for the tang in 2 scales of handle material and glue/pin in place, then shape handle. You can also combine this with a slip-on bolster.

3. Instead of setting the tang into a mortised-out hollow in the scales, surround the tang in a piece of material that is the same thickness as the tang, then glue/pin the handle materials onto that. Aka a "frame handle.". Can also combine with a slip-on bolster.

I'm surprised at that, my Kraton/Santoprene grips are still tight. The reason I mentioned that they might be difficult to re-handle is that I tried that on my first Master Hunter and pretty well botched it. The tang isn't exactly centered, it's a bit of an odd shape (totally functional, nothing weak about it) and I couldn't get a wooden handle to fit tightly. Someone with better skills and tools no doubt could make a handsome handle though. Post some pix when you're done.

I need to do the same with an old Barong machete from Cold Steel. The original versions had Kraton handles and mine is loose. I was thinking of a 3 ply wood handle over the hidden tang. It needs some blade shaping too. It’s had a rough life.
