New handle for my Special

Has anybody tried to replace the black phenolic handle on an older (1979 era) 119? I have a rather large crack in mine, and the Buck factory said they don't repair these handles. The cross pin is visible so I don't have a problem drilling it out. Is it a problem removing the pommel?

I'd like to keep using my older knife, the quality of the blade is far superior to my new 119 I purchased last year. I am thinking about trying my hand at rebuilding it with stacked leather washers.

Any suggestions?

Joe Houser advocates crushing the old grip in a vise to facilitate removal... ;)

Stacked leather washers sounds cool! Not many here will applaud your work, though...Even Buck's master craftsmen couldn't satisfy them...

It's not too difficult. Here's one i did with stag.
