Hi folks
Just wanted to share this.

A few years ago I purchased a 15AK and BAS blems. Nice pieces, but I hated the cho creep and the bas handle could be better. So, I finally got the chance to do a little project. I refitted the 15AK horn handle after removing the cho creep, and replaced the BAS horn handle with wood. These are some pictures of the BAS. First time I've ever done this, so it's been a steep learning curve. 15AK pics will come later.

Nice job and illustration. I would like to hear more about how you fit the wood to the tang and how you shaped the handle. Power tools, by hand, or combo perhaps.

Thanks guys! :)

IUKE12, to fit the tang on the wood, I carved out the shape of the tang (approximately half its thickness) on each piece of wood. Once the tang fit, I glued the two slabs of wood with epoxy and left it clamped together for 12 hours to cure.

Before shaping the handle, I worked on the part of the handle which fit into the bolster. Once that was in securely, the rest was just rasping and sanding away (first the square outline of the handle before rounding the shape). The handle for the 15AK served as a model since it is most comfortable in my hand.

(not done shaping yet)

I don't have any power tools save for a power drill, so everything was done with a hacksaw, round and flat bastard files, wood rasp, lots of sand paper and lots of elbow grease :D Took me a while.

Steve, the wood was from a piece of scrap I found that seemed hard enough for a handle, so I don't know what tree it's from. The linseed oil does give it a nice coppery color. They handle and feel much better after, too.

Here'r the 15AK and the BAS (work in progres) after rehandling.

Fantastic work, Eric:eek::thumbup: Makes it feel a lot more "yours", doesn't it?:D

Thanks Jake. They are certainly more valuable to me now than when I first got them. :D

Fine looking wood handle, thank you

Thanks A. Yangdu and Ironballs
The work was inspired by some of the amazing tutorials and work I read on this forum. So thanks to all of you who put the effort in to do them.

Nice job man. That looks really good. Be careful, you'll start rehandling all your knives!
