Hey guys
Ever since i got my CCF hawk from Mr. Liley a few months ago, ive been playing with it a bit, but he put such a beautiful handle on it, ive been too scared to do a whole lot with it, like throwing and stuff
Ive been planning on carving an ironwood handle for it, but just havent gotten around to it, weathers not been great for carving stuff outside, with the snow and cold
Yesterday i noticed i had a brand new sledge handle, the 36" one, and got to thinking the hawk head just might fit, so i tried it
Now my CCF hawk is hung like an axe and im loving it, throws great, chops great, looks good too i think
On to the pics

STOUT! That's pretty cool, those sledge handles are usually rounded, compared to oval hawk handles. How does that affect the head orientation? Does it take more attention on your part, time to look at the handle before each swing, or is it not an issue?

It looks great IMO, like a whole other animal. The original handle is beautiful, so is the new one, in a rustic sort of way, but now it's ready to be used.

Thanks Robin, and Foxx
The Sledge handle is oval, for the most part, and it was almost a perfect fit, the grain on the handle as about perfect, all i did was tap it on to start and then seated it all the way down by pounding on the bottom of the handle, lifted it a bit, trimmed the minimal shavings the had popped out under the head and reset it, and then useded a peice of black cherry for a wedge
I used a spoke shave to contour it a bit more to my liking, then a few mins on a belt sander
So in answer to your question Foxx, it takes no extra attention to orient the head the way i need while swinging

You did a nice job, and if it gets used more- great. But -lol - that curly maple handle was smoking.
I think you will have problems because the taper of a slid on hawk head is different than a "hourglass" shape of the split and wedge fit heads of axes/ hatchets.

I carved down a broke sledge handle to fit upside down in one of my hawks. Works fantastic as a 30 inch handle. Yours looks great.

Thats what i was thinking, but its a very very tight fit, and wedged well, and so far its held up to a bunch of throwing, alot of misses, and i spent a half hour using it to carve a bow stave ive been working on
My opinion is that its going to hold up, as it hasnt loosened at all, or even shifted

:eek:Ya BROKE that purdy one did'nt cha:confused:Just kidin Mike don't get all torqued up,now you can split wood all day long

I can post some pics of the other handle if you like Steve, LoL
I really feel better beating on this handle, but now im at a loss as to what to do with the old one
Maybe ill add a spike to it and put it in the impact club thread ;)
