New handles for no machete?

I'm working on refurbish of my grandfathers old machete. I need a new pair of handles. Mis it more difficult to drill holes in line to already made handles or make new handles and drill the holes aligned with the ones already in the steel?

Let me know if you have any thoughts.

If it were mine, I would just use the holes that are already in the steel. Just clamp one side of the scales to the tang and drill through the existing holes into the wood. 😀
