I've been thinking a lot of my knive POU's and i realized that my next logical move would be to move on the the EDC type knives and move on to a nice sturdy hard use knife.

Of course, i went to my go to knife company, benchmade, and took a look at the axis bone collector.

I'm mostly looking for a knife that can faufil all of my outdoor survival tasks like skinning, impromtu fillet knife and some batoning.

My budget is sub 150$

please send me some suggestions! thaanks!

Does it HAVE to be a folder? If I were you, for those chores you listed, I would take a look at a small fixed blade with a pocket sheath, myself. Maybe an esee Izula or Kabar Becker eskabar.

I have looked at the Adamas folder and i really liked it, but I'm looking for something much less tactical then that, plus i really like the blade shape more on the bone collector, but in your opinion, how do the two stack up? they both have D2, Full stainless liners and G-10?

I really don't know how they are personally. I've used a para 2 for everything you mentioned except batoning. It was plenty of knife. I mentioned them because they are designed as hard use knives and you said you liked benchmade.

If you want a benchmade I'd get a Adamas It has a beefed up axis lock and is very comfrotable in the hand , no hot spots at all when using, I regret selling mine so much, I also had a contego It's a great knife with a great steel, That will take and hold and edge as far as your sharpening skills will allow. For the things your wanting to use a folder for I would either go with the Adamas 275, Or a fixed blade.

IMO and personal and my experience with benchmades IMO the adamas 275 is the toughest folder in the lineup, In person it really doesn't look "tactical" It looks more like a folding hunting knife, and it's a great value to boot.

I think you've had some good suggestions. But a filet knife or a skinning knife is normally thin-bladed, whereas batoning usually is done with a heavy thick blade. So I will pass on suggestions for folders. It's very difficult to find all of those applications to be served by one knife.

I agree with the small fixed blade. Izula, becker or scrapivor type knives for what you want to do. The adamas is pretty thick and cutting performance suffers because of it. It works, but will take more effort than a thinner fixed blade IMO. I have both the contego and adamas. The contego is the better performer in cutting tasks, but the handle could be pretty brutal on the hands after continued use without gloves. Batoning is not something I recommend with a folder. I know you could get away with it, But I would still always choose a fixed blade for that.

That and the knives I mentioned are considerably cheaper than the two BM's.

For the tasks you described, a cold steel voyager or lone star. Thinner blade with a better grind.

Hard use and "fillet" knife should never be used in the same sentence as they are opposite spectrum. You have to have realistic expectations of what you are going to actually need the knife for opposed to what you think you will. If you need to cut through a cinder block wall, the Adams will do fine. If you want to make a shelter and cook some food, look at a bushcraft knife. There is no do-it-all knife, but there are the right tools for the job. Go with a bushcraft fixed blade, small folder saw and Grip/Mini-grip.. what more could you need?

Good advice being given. "Hard use" is a marketing term that has only been used recently and is as descriptive as something being a "tactical " folder.

The true hardest use folders I've ever seen are traditional folders carried by ranchers and farmers. Used for decades and still reliable due to basic care being given whenever needed. You tell someone that has spent his life outdoors that you need to "baton " with your folder and see what he says to you...

You have to decide what real uses you want for your EDC, whether for chores at home/work or for outdoors activities when you are a camp or on the water. There is no catch-all knife that will do everything.

Get 2 knives;
1. Mora Companion: $15
2. Ontario RAT 5: 95

Total: $110, and should handle all your needs

Right now really loving the zt 0200KW, highly recommended and well within your budget

POU? That's nutnfancy talk. I suggest getting an opinel #8 and seeing if you really even need a hard use folder.

If you want something you can beat up without much worry you could try benchmades hk conspiracy its a 7.55inch frame lock that you can pick up for around $60-70

How about a Tops Tibo, designed by one of our very own.
Do a BF search and check it out :)

I get what you all are saying, and I agree! I'm looking at both a fixed and a folder now, but as far as folders that wont get wrecked for a weekend in the woods, what do you recommend? benchmade bone collector? something else?
