I recently got a box with some prototype hatchets by Ted at Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works. I built and maintain his web site, so he sent these to me for a "photo shoot".

All I have to say is BADASS! His new designs are killer. I thought I'd post some pics here.

These are all about 18" total length, with 7.25" heads. Steel is 1/4" 5160. Micarta handles...

This one has a textured rubber overlay on top of the Micarta. He calls it "Hawg Hyde". ;) Very grippy...

This one is a bit shorter: 14" with a 5.75" head...

I'll pass on any comments or suggestions to Ted. Thanks!!

these look absolutely stunning mate..is your buddy going to start selling them?

Some very nice work, I need to purchase a couple :D to hang over the fireplace. I didn't see anything about the metal thickness - 1/4" or ?

Durability of the Hawg Hide - If it has passed the Ted test then it's good enough for me

Also need an Assassin - in case Al-Qaeda is lurking around :)

Are these available?

Ted's creations have always been superb, functional, yet not overstated ;)

I have some of his earlier work (wish I had bought more) and regret that some of his newer models seem to be a little on the lighter side in comparison to the battle tank construction of years past.

Yep, Irezumi, I added them to his web site (mineralmountain.com) for him and they are for sale now.

Sarge, the thickness on these are 1/4" but Ted might be convinced to do them in 3/8". These are "fighting" axes, so 1/4" is good for me. I believe the Assassin model is still in his catalog on his web site. As far as lighter stuff goes, his new-ish DV8 line are made with thinner stock, but all of his regular stuff is still out of 1/4" (was he using thinner stock in the early days? I've been a fan of MMHW for about 7 years now and it's all been very stout stuff).

BTW, this year is Mineral Mountain's 25th anniversary, which is part of the reason he introduced a bunch of new models.

Thanks for the input!

Thanks John, I will be sure to check them out. It is very hard for us to get this type of stuff into Australia so many of us go through Jason from elitesteel.net who organises the correct permits for us. I will be sure to check out the website though.

Yeaaahhhh, John !!!!!....
Tell ted he REALLY rocks, after the push-dagger, those axes...

Kumdo, What's the turn around time for these 'hawks?

I think he's running about 3 weeks right now... pretty dang quick for a knife maker! ;)

Wow! Those look sweet. Mineral Mountain makes some really bomber blades. My White River Bowie is still going strong. Near-indestructible.

 I just got one of these...it is awesome. One of the most intimidating axes I've seen.:D

Would you be kind enough to post what the actual lenght of the handle is. I'm curious as to the "reach" these 'hawks have. Also what's the balance like?

I don't have a tape measure, but the one I have is approximately 2" shorter than my ATC Light Infantry Hawk. My fast guess is about 17.25". The point of balance is at the forward tip of the handle. It's not head-heavy like a traditional hawk or hatchet. The axe feels like a very big knife, almost like a MMHW bowie. The point is perfect for stabbing/thrusting attacks and the beard is sharp enough to puncture while hooking. The end of the handle is wedge shaped and looks like it will make an excellent pry bar. I'll try to find something to chop and pry soon and post the results. This axe has a very different feel than my ATC CQC-T or Light Infantry Hawk. If I ever get tapped to go back to the desert, this will be the hawk strapped to my vest when I go out the gate.

Wow, those are some killer axes! What kind of sheath, if any, do they come with? I think I need one in a shoulder rig....
