My hawk made it all the way to Singapore, thanks to Fedex!
(Hawk on the Top) This one is the American Tomahawk Model 1 "Gold Point Forge" edition which essentially was a set of prototypes that Ryan did in preparation for the new faceted hickory handle. The current handle is apparently a hammer handle, and the faceted handle will be the standard going forward (but probably won't be hand shaped by Ryan like this one!)
I used to own the synthetic handle Model 1 - I found it a little heavy (22oz from memory) and I didn't like the girth of the handle. Definitely super tough and stiff.
The new faceted handle is very nice... indexes the edge really well in the hand, and I prefer it over the oval style on my 2000-era ATC LaGana hawk. It's slimmer than the synthetic Model 1.
By comparison:
(Top) ATC La Gana: 16.7oz, 13.5" long
(Bottom) American Tomahawk Model 1: 17.3oz, almost 14" long
The edge of the Model One is parallel with the shaft, whereas the ATC LaGana is sloped... I don't know if it makes any practical difference. If the ATC LaGana had the faceted handle I'd be super happy
The RMJ length from spike to edge is about 1/4" shorter and the ATC LaGana has a more streamlined head and a smaller eye. The RMJ should be stronger but they recommend buying the synthetic if you plan to do a lot of throwing.
I've been reluctant to use the ATC Lagana due to it being hard to find on the secondary market, so I am glad I've got this one ready to go when I finally get a chance to chop some wood!
