New Hawk for the Boy

I posted a while back asking for advice on a Hawk for my son. One that would be with him for a lifetime and that he could remember me by when I long gone. This is what I ended up with for now. It's actually so nice that I would like one but the tomahawk head that I used has gone way up in price since I bought it. Even though it's a tomahawk head it has a hatchet like profile that should be good for splitting. Kind of blinged up but practical. About 13" long but cuts like crazy. Has a little hammer pole that makes it more practical. Just thought I would paste it to see what yawl think. BTW it's a Craig Barr head. It's a little dirty because we haven't really cleaned it up since using it this weekend. This one is not meant for throwing but we did throw it a couple of times and it worked great. I used coffee to stain the handle and finished with a bees wax and mineral oil mixture.

Man that a great looking hawk. Just the right size I think. Last one I did was about that size.

Is your boy going to find it under the tree?

Good looking and your son will be so excited. Five members of my family are getting knives, swords or axes for Christmas. We need to pass on our passions to the succeeding generations

Nice looking, very thick, I bet the weight is great for chopping. Lucky kid!

No this is one that I gave him the other day. I did get him one for throwing that will be under the tree but I'm a little disappointed with it. Good thing is it will give us the chance to work on it together.

I don't know if it's the grind or what but it bites deep. If the price on ebay hadn't gone up so much, I would be making one for me. I wish I was as lucky as him when I was a kid. He has his own little collection. Went out the other day for him to practice with his HI Khuks. He's only 9 though so they have to say put up most of the time.

Nice looking hawk!

Nicely done modification.
What did you use to cut the top off?

What kind of hawk did you get to throw?

I think that I just used a trim saw to cut it off. The hawk that I got him to throw was a mouse hawk from crazy crow. No complaints about the company but I'm not happy with the little mouse hawk. I wish that I had just got a cold steel. He threw mine fine and could stick every time. The handle on this new hawk is tiny and would be impossible to be a user and the edge is bad. Trying to save money always ends up costing more.

Sounds like a young niece of mine. I harassed her into throwing. She stuck it the first time and did better than her older bothers.
It was a CS trail hawk also.
They are too light for more than one rotation for me.

I have an older Silver Phoenix that throws well. I've spent unaccountable hours tossing it....
It's a cheaper stainless, hammer poll.
I'm now waiting as patiently as I can for a Craig Barr to arrive.

To answer a couple different threads;

Handles;
househandle
hawkinsknifemakingsupplies
dunlapwoodcrafts (I really like some of these)

Hawk heads to ponder;
fortturner
trackofthewolf
discountcutlery(hard to navigate, just keep drilling)

I have not ordered from any of them.

Permanent handle attachment;
On mine I don't try to at all anymore.
A missed throw at a static target, an intentional handle hit while hunting small game, needing to pack in two pieces, using the handle as a club.
All things that have happened to me. I'd rather the head slide off the back of the handle than the handle crack.
I used to rawhide wrap, that works well.

There is also a wide variety of knowledge and information right here on BF. It's just buried in the past and has to be looked up.
I've personally learned a ton from searching and reading.

Just my half pence worth.

Nice job on the hawk. I have always wondered about the Craig Barr Hawk. You are right about the price on the hawk; they seem to be going up, as they usually end up being $150 after the auction ends on ebay. You say that the Craig Barr bites deep into wood, how does it do on fine work, such as feathersticks and whittling?
