All these hawks are made out of 1080 spring steel. The double I forged last week and finished today. The bearded hawk I forged yesterday and also finised today. The spike hawk I just forged this afternoon. The picture isn't real good but will give you an idea. Oregon sunshine wasn't here today......

Damn! I don't know which one I like best...they all look fantastic!!

Man Raymond, I think you & that fire are brothers! Fantastic work. Each one I was thinking, I like that one! Then, No that one! Then, No that one! Cripes, you confuse us simple guys. :D

Dave, If I wasn't so confused I'd probably stop making them. Think I'm addicted to the carbon dioxide comming off the forge. The more I forge, the more I want to forge. I'm off in La La Land most the time, to come out of it I just grab the drift without a glove....:o

:D LOL :D

Man does that ever sound like it'd put your feet back in the dirt. Ouch!

If I may ask, where'd you learn this stuff? I always wonder how smiths learn what they do. It seems like something you couldn't just start doing after reading a couple books. Maybe I'm wrong.

I am beginning to feel twinges of wanting to hammer steel, mostly because my friend Reg is such a fine smith - I wanna make stuff like that! And now you come off with these hawks. Between you and Bill Buxton and Reg Ellery (and Nick Wheeler! and Guy Thomas! and) I can't sleep anymore...

Man this is all I need - another knife addiction... :D

Really cool! Does anyone sell heads alone so people like me can try to put together a hawk?

Steve, You got an email.....

Dave, You can learn some by reading, lots of good information out there but the real way to learn forging is by doing and not giving up. Most people will try something but decide real soon if something is to their liking or not. It doesn't just happen but after awhile it starts becomming a given. There's alot of thought given all the way threw the process. Anymore my arm gives out before my mind wants to stop but the arm usually wins. I'm working on a full bearded hawk today. Never did one before. This is my third break on forging it, I'm actually letting it cool off so I can cut it. Its out of 7/8" square stock, its always harder to forge than 5/8 or 3/4 plus its Friday. Every time I'm at the forge I learn something, doesn't mean I remember it, but your constantly learning. I just started doing the hawks about a 2 months ago and feel like I've come along way. Knives will seem easy if I remember how to do them......Ray
