Finished this hawk up Saturday night. All hand forged out of 6" piece of 3/4" square stock of 1080. Threw in the clunker knife just for pizzaz. By the way all the steel in this knife was made from 60 grade rebar......Ray

Actually...I really like the look of the knife.

What is 60 grade rebar? Is it just junk steel, or does the 60 grade actually mean something?

Dang Ray,That is Gorgeous!!!!!!!!
I am going to have to do some more work on mine now, yours make mine look terrible and amateurish....

To answer the question about rebar.People think it is junk, but the 6o grade is actually a really good steel to make knives from. Also hawks...

Bruce, The time I put on these hawks they better look good. I'm so slow putting these together but when I'm done with them I like the looks of them. Now if I can just remember where I put it.....

Thanks for the comment on the rebar, still think most people think I'm full of stuff. If they still made the rebar square you know darn well what my hawks would be made of. I had to buy the steel for the hawks........

Grade 60 refers to the average yield stress of the steel formulation and heat treatement (if any).
In this case 60 ksi or 60,000 pounds per square inch of stress is required to elastically deform the steel, at room temp.

40 and 60 are the most common grades of rebar, 60 and 90 for structural steel (though most of it is recyled cars and comes out at 90 anyway).

Beautiful blade by the way, I can't believe you call it a "clunker".

Clunker? No way, those go great together, your getting good a dressing up a hawk, that realy flowes together.

I was under the impresion that 60 grade re-bar was .60 or better carbon content. never made a knife from it, but have forged a piece out and it hardened and showed fine grain at the break.

Again, great job Richard!

I was just kidding about calling that bowie a clunker. Its got the best lines of any knife I've made so far, I've been able to use that same shape on smaller blades and it works real well. If I remember the length of the blade is 11 1/2" and around 16" overall. Its really light and has a modified convex grind. The handle is kingwood although it looks like cocobolo. Just put it in the picture with the hawk cause I think they both compliment each other. Glad you guys like them both. The knife started out as a piece of 6 bar, 3/4" round.....Ray

Ray that is one fine hawk, can't believe how quickly you work! I can't think of many making hawks that are this good, I could look at that thing for hours. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, the clunker ain't bad either! :D

I should make clunkers...

Dave

Thanks for the positive comments. Glad you guys like my hawk and my work.....Ray

Glad you like the clunker also.....
