I haven't worked with metal in several years but needed something to do with my hands so transformed a CS Pipe hawk into this. Made this for my brother-in-law, it's a user not a show piece. Used aluminum black for the blueing, first time with it and don't really care for it, but he liked so am leaving it, I prefer Brownells oxpho. Think I need to polish the pole head though. For some reason I can not get the handle to accept stain so when the weather finally dips a little more I'm going to have a fire and see what a little flame can do for that handle. I don't normally post my stuff on the web but I kinda like my work this time. Will post updated photos when I'm 100% done with it as I have a few things left to do. As I said it's been 17+ years since I've done any metal work and I am surprised by what I remember and have forgotten. The screw hole I screwed up on so grabbed the dremel and went to work, I rather like that part. So be gentle with the feedback. lol

The pics look great, I think the handle even looks good. Maybe you're being your own harshest critic. I like what you did to your screw hole, ur umm, I mean nice correction. At least you screwed up your own screw hole, I mean , ummm, better you than someone else!:D

Nice work Needa, I use Fiebings leather dye on all my hafts, works great, I use mainly the medium brown which is a reddish brown and the dark brown which is dark chocolate.

Here's a couple to show you the colours.

The haft was stained about a dozen times... Wanted a black or dark stain so I used ebony about 5 times with leaving it on for 45 minutes the last time, came out a light grey. Then I used a walnut stain I bought from the store to the same effect except it colored it a little brown. The last two times I used home made walnut stain and that's where it sits now. The pictures make it look better than it does in real life. Something says the haft I have is treated but????? I might have the wife stop at Tandy to pick up some fiebings to see how that works but I think it might do the same thing....

Word of advice, if you gotta screw up a screw hole then just try to screw someone else's screw hole, not your own... LMAO....

Pipeman, I love your work, I'll give your tip a try to see how it turns out...

Hey Howard, I buy Fiebings at Tandy.
Needa, if you are wanting black, i would avoid the Fiebing USMC black, it is a wierd dye, kind lays on top.
I also mix dyes a lot, oil over the spirit based and visa versa, doesn't seem to make a difference.

Not sure what the haft is made from, I'm new to hawks, but you could try a trick I learned for dying Beech/Birch gun stocks. Get a bottle of RIT clothing/laundry dye and cut it ~50/50 with rubbing alcohol. Brush or rub it on, let it sit for a bit and repeat. Just keep adding more coats until you reach your desired look.

Pipeman, that is a drop dead gorgeous piece there... sheath and all.

Needalife, no need to be gentle with the feedback.. it looks great!
