Hey everyone, knew to the knife forums here but I just purchased my first high quality slipjoint, I have had many nice fixed blades but this is my first pocket knife. I do have one question though pertaining to the liners and spring. On the first and second picture you can see there is a small gap between the spring for the spey blade and the brass liner. Is this something that causes concern? I have never owned a nice slipjoint, it doesnt bug me a ton but I did pay 145$ for this knife. Everything else is very nice and cleanly fitted, something i should worry about?

Here you can see the light shining through in the second picture and the gap in the first, it is a small hairline gap.

And some pictures of the knife with a spoon I carved.

Nice looking spoon. The knife does cut. As for as the little gap, that is not uncommon in production knives no matter the cost. Knife nuts like us don't like it but it happens. Don't know what to tell you about the spey blade play. It's up to you about sending it back. If that is all that is wrong I would forget it and use it. Best Wishes.

Welcome Slips!! Nice #48. A #48 was the second GEC I bought and has become my favorite pattern.

As for your questions, no that gap shouldn't cause any concern. I don't believe it'll affect the knife's performance at all. As for the play you mention, are you talking about when the spey blade is closed? If so then I don't believe that's an issue either.

Ok if the gap isnt an issue than i dont mind it. As it is so tiny.

As for the blade, I just mean when closing there is a little bit of vertical play before spring pressure but like almost nothing, where as on the clip point you can feel the pressure from the first bit of pressure down on the back of the blade to close, other than that everything is pretty much flawless.

EDIT: feeling it a bit more, it actually seems normal, just the spey has a tiny bit less resistance before it hits the spring, so it is a non issue, so as long as the small gap doesnt cause any issues than it will be a good user.

That may work itself out after you use it more. Try a drop of lube on the joint. May or may no help.

The blade play may get better with use. You bought a knife with natural handle material. Stag will shrink and swell because it is porous. Since the whole thing is pinned together when the stag shrinks a little you may experience small gaps like you have. Don't worry about any of it and enjoy your new knife.

Yah that is true, didnt think of the stag being pinned causing it, it is so minimal i cant even see it unless i bring it up to my eye. Like a hairline.

Thanks for the help guys, no longer fretting that i made a bad purchase. The blade actually came shaving sharp which was surprising and it cuts so well.

Congrats on your first GEC folder - what a beauty!! Welcome to the forum also. This is like a little family here in the Traditional forum, so hang around and join in the fun. Tons of info here so you'll learn alot. I know for me I've developed a greater and greater appreciation for traditional folders as time goes on.

If you haven't done it yet clean it out the joints really good with some mineral oil and paper towels or I guess whatever your favorite method is. the point im trying to make is these knives are filthy fresh out of the tube. You'd be surprised how much gunk you can clean out of there with a little bit of work and time. The knife will open and close much smoother and probably much better for you.

Nice #48... I just got mine recently... My first double blade trapper and I love the pattern! Welcome to the forums too eh :-)
