Hey everyone, ive been lurking around here for a while, and i must say, great webpage you have here. tons of information to be had!

In anycase ive been looking for a knife and figured this is a good place to get some advice. Ive got a small fixed blade 5" or so) and a large fixed blade (10") so i want something to fill the gap. Preferably something that can take a beating, stand up to some good utility work, and still be reliable enough to use in a SHTF scenario.

if there is such a knife please let me know. i was thinking the BK-7 but if there are any other options out there i'd like to know!

thanks alot in advance folks.

Ian.

Is that like Racer-X?;)
So, what are your 5" and 10" blades? I'm sure others will chime in with a host of recommendations, but the BK-7 is a fine knife. Good luck on your quest.

Welcome to Bladeforums!

There's a few factors to consider in picking out a new knife. Size is a good start, but use is a better one. Are you looking for a hunting knife? A thin blade is best. A survival knife? A thicker blade is better. General utility? Maybe it's time for a 3 - 4". Maybe a folder.

What climate? Indoors use or outdoors? (Stainless or high carbon steel)

This is the fun part, thinking about what goes into CUTTING STUFF UP. :D

thanks for all the responses guys!! i'm looking for a survival knife, made for almost all outdoor use. its gonna go everywhere with me.

i looked at the swamp rats and theyre a bit out of my price range, which is why the BK-7 was looking nice, but any and all recomendations are more than welcome, thanks again!

Ian.

Yes, the BK7 is the right choice or a CS Bushranger. Next in line would be the Ontario RAT-7 and for even more money (3 times the price of a BK7) the Camp Tramp.

Welcome to BFC!!! I have a BK-9 and prefer it to the BK-7. Some may disagree but I feel the 9 is more versatile due to those extra two inches as well as the resulting extra weight.

well i just ordered a "closeout" [factory second] BK7 and if i'm happy with that i'll just have to get the BK9 versatility ya know?

That BK-7 is a nice knife! If you want another in the same class, but a slightly different approach, take a look at the Cold Steel SRK. You can also get them as 2nd's off the CS Special Projects website -- http://www.ltspecpro.com/

Good choice on the BK7. Now that you have a 5, 7, and 10, you'll need a 4, 6, 8 and 12. Check out the Buck Nighthawk for your 6;)

Another good choice in this size range is a 12" Sirupati or Ang Khola from Himalayan Imports. You can pick up a blem from the HI forum here on Bladeforums for $50. They aren't conventional knives by western standards, but I've found them to be some of the finest blades available. Definitely worth a look.

the chrise reeve green beret is one hell of a solid all-around fixed blade, real comfortable & tough..

if you're strapped for cash, get the benchmade nimravus.
