New Here and need help

Hey folks, new to the RAT Forum and wanted some advice from the experts here.

I am looking for a good all around knife for camping, hiking, and backpacking.
I am leaning towards the RC3 but wanted to get your advice before hand.
I am also getting an Izula but it is for EDC.

RC-3 is a great choice, as is the Izula. Both are work well for most tasks. Just remember the RC-3 isn't a BK-9, not a huge chopper by any stretch. But the RC-3/Izula combo is what I carry and I am very happy with it.
 
I would suggest the RC6 if you plan on buying an Izula ,great combo right there... RC6 on pack or hip & Izula around neck or pocket.....

Not an expert by any regard but I do camp, hike, and backpack. While doing all of these exercises I carry a knife or two....or three. lol

I found during my testing of the RC-3 during the survival comp. that it could preform any task I needed it for, I was never really limited by its size.
It did very well batoning through 3in-4in limbs and such, it was also very comfortable in hand. It held a very good edge and stayed relatively rust free, with no mind toward rust prevention.
The sheath was really the only lacking feature when hung as a neck knife. The blade would come loose from the sheath if i were to jump hard, which when your depending on one blade is very concerning. (when climbing, walking across bridges and hiking. You can see my rational i hope)
I will be buying my RatPack RC-3 as soon as they are released.
I currently own the RC-6 and carry it everyday on my farm and such, due to its size and my areas laws i will edc my RC-3 or Izula (when i get it :D)
 
Tony nailed it. If you're going to have an Izula already, your smaller tight chore knife is handled. Get a bigger camp knife for the big chores. The RC-6 can cut shelter poles, split wood, beat through just about anything you can throw at it. You don't want two smaller knives. That would involve too much decision making on which one to use for what. Make it easy, this is for this, and this is for this. No decision making.
 
I just bought an RC-4 for the tasks your describing.

It's a GREAT knife!! For me, the size is just perfect for the tasks you described.

I've been using it the last two weekends and just can't put it down.

Get an RC-4, you won't be disappointed!
 
I original like the idea of a RC-3 and thought it would be plenty of knife for what I was looking for then the RC-4 came out and then I realize its better to have that extra bit. So my recommindation is a RC-4.
 
Izula & RC-6 what a perfect combo! start with that,then get RC-3 & RC-4 I think you need them all.

Rc4 here , you have an extra inch over the Rc3, and I have been telling the wife for years

Since you will be getting the Izula, get the RC-4 and RC-6 to go with it. You will have all you bases covered. Anything else will just be gravy, like the RC-10, machete that will be coming in the future.
 
Remember that in an all around camp knife "size matters." Go with the RC6 since you've got the Izula.
 
I have a HEST and a RC5 and have come to the conclusion that though different models may be oriented towards specific tasks better, you simply cannot go wrong with any model you chose.
 
Izula makes a great EDC.

For camping and especially backpacking, I'd go RC-3 or 4. I chose an RC-4, but will be getting a 3 to save a little weight and space when trekking. I love big knives, but when looking to trim weight from my pack, the big knives get left home and the lil' buggers go out to work.

I would suggest the RC-4. It's big enough to do some serious tasks but small enough to pack well. The Izula would be a great companion/EDC knife.
 
If you're getting the Izula, I'd also vote for RC-4 as camp knife, gives you the most use out of two knifes. (If you do not generally prefer large knives - in that case go for the 6.)
 
If you plan on using it for wood collection, or building shelters, I recommend the 6. If not, the rc 4 is a great size and weight for hiking.
