Hello to all,
Great forum and here goes...
Last week I received a Kershaw Avalanche as a gift from my wife. It was my first high-quality knife and I was very excited. I was initially impressed out of the box and loved the opening action. The handle material was extremely "grippy", which I liked very much. However, on about the sixth or seventh flick I heard something bouncing across the table. It was the thumb stud!!! It sits in the hole so loosely that simply turning the knife over on its side allows the stud to fall out. Is there no retaining device for the thumb-stud? I find it hard to believe that it would simply sit in there via friction. It was then that I really started inspecting the knife. I noticed two other flaws. There was significant blade wobble, both laterally and vertically, when locked open and the blade sits off-center between the liners when closed. I've got the knife packaged up and will be returning it to Kershaw on Monday. Hopefully they will be able to fix it. But for a ~$100 knife I was a bit underwhelmed.
So having had my first taste of a quality knife I decided to get a Gerber Spectre for my work knife (I open alot of boxes and the Kershaw was going to fill that niche). I stopped and picked one up on the way to work on Friday, opened up the box, clipped the Spectre to my pocket and proceeded to clock in. About 1/2 hour later I reached for it and "tried" to open it. I couldn't do it with my thumb. I could only open it by grasping the exposed portion of the spine of the blade near the tip and pulling up. It has loosened up some since then but it is still incredibly stiff and I still can't get it open with my thumb. Is there anyway to loosen it up without damaging the knife? I'm a newbie at this and I don't want to screw it up.
Thanks to all. I hope I have better luck on my next purchase... a Benchmade Model 705
Regards,
