If you're a fan of carbon steel, you'll love 1095. Definitely holds an edge well, and is easy to resharpen. But to be honest, you'd do well to invest in one with some sort of Black, protective-coating on the blade. (If you're considering a fixed-blade knife). Otherwise, it'll rust away on you, like you wouldn't believe! ..... Even if you didn't do anything to abuse the knife. (I'm speaking from personal experience).

1095 is an excellent simple tool steel. The KaBar Impact knives are supposed to be hardened to 56-58 Rockwell ..... I prefer 1095 a little harder than that. Particularly if you get one that's near the low end of the stated range, edge holding probably won't be outstanding, but the knife should be a little more suited for things like heavy prying, digging, etc.

Also if you don't have some particular reason for choosing the tanto, the Impacts come in spear and drop point, IMO more practical designs and easier to sharpen.

1095 is a 0.95% carbon steel. 1075 is a 0.75% carbon steel and so on...

dantzk.

Actually whats funny is that the way Ka-Bar heat treats their stuff, it is right in the embrittlement zone. Its not going to have great edge retention, and its going to be fairly brittle as well.
