Hello

Found this site while doing a search for the date on an old Imperial brand,
stag handled, equal end, jackknife, I have owned for a while.

Great site!

Found the info. somewhere here, it is an early 1920's production.
Also was able to date several other, early, well made, Imperials.

After many hours of reading through a number of subforums, I registered.

Been collecting for 50+ years, inactive for a while, and I see that several companies are out of business, at least not manf. in the USA anymore, too bad.

I gotta ask this question.

What does the term "slipjoint" mean exactly. I don't recall ever hearing it.
It seems like you are talking about a single blade folder, without a locking device, other then the backspring tension on the tang. Am I close?

I have a few other questions to fast track up to 2010, but will hold off.

I am not a frequent poster, but if I can figure out including photos, I may
try to contribute more

Ray

Yeah, that's what a slipjoint is, although not necessarily a single blade. Swiss Army knives, Schrade Old Timers, barlows, etc.

Welcome Ray!
Hang around...the guys here are a great bunch of people.
I took the term of "slipjoint" to just be a modern name for pocket knife, or folder, I could be wrong...lets see what the experts reckon.

Ok ..photo's...have a read of this, as this works for me..

Join a site such as "photobucket", once you have loaded photos from your computer files onto photobucket...you can then open a thread like you have done here...drop this thread down into your task bar...and have photobucket running as well, whatever photo you want on your blade forum thread - now that your photos are on photobucket..they now have a IMG code, right hand click on the IMG code and "copy"...then bring up your blade forum thread...go into your posting and click "paste"...you now have a link that will come up as a photo when someone looks into your thread...you can check this by looking at you "preview post"..before actually posting it to make sure it all correct.
whew!! did ya get all that!!

Welcome to the forum Ray. Do you have any pictures of that stag handled Imperial?

Yes, slipjoint is the term for a knife whose blade(s) are held open and held closed by the pressure of the backspring, but not locked in either position. The term is fairly old, just not mainstream - more a manufacturing/technical term. If you look at really old catalogs - say late 1800's - you'll see an indirect reference: what we call lockback knives now are referred to as "lockjoint" knives (actually a much more accurate term). Now, it's a way to specify that you're talking about the old, traditional style of pocket knife rather than any of the dozen or more lock-du-jour modern style of folding knives.

hiddy ray a slipjoint is just the everyday pocketknife that you've seen all your life' members of the foeum sometimes start using jargons that fit our communication. aftef you have read all the things that come up for a while it will be much simpler.

Imperial Stag, mentioned above, first time attempting, followed instructions
given on post here. I hope the size of the photo is customary.
