Hey guys! New to the forums but I've had a bk2 for a couple of years now. Still need to mod the belt loop as at then only thing that really bugs me. It gets good camp use and general bushcraft use along with a truck knife for work.

Anyways, I'm really looking forward to getting a second smaller becker for field dressing game. Turkey and deer specifically. I'm leaning towards the bk14 but wanted to ask what you guys were using?

Thanks!

Welcome! Have you looked at the BK16? Its a very popular knife for your intended uses. The BK14 would also work well. :)

Yeah, the BK14/11 handles are too small for my hand, though the smaller blade might be better for skinning. If it were me I'd get a tweener (15, 16, or 17) for the better handle fit.

I would think a bk 11 or 14 would make an excellent addition with the bk2 you will have just about every knife situation covered!

Welcome! Yea the 14 is a great blade, will serve you right. I prefer the 11 tho and the 16 is a must have knife in the Becker line.
But as tfields stated, with the BK2, an 11 or 14 would be a better knife to get next. Then the 16 and shortly after....... the 9.

I dont have one yet, but my next purchase for field dressing and butchering deer is going to be a BK15.

I used my 15 for 2 out of the 3 deer I killed this season. For the first one, I used the King. Its all I had on me ha ha. Even removed the head and legs with it.

But I will tell you, as a field knife, I would suggest any of the tweeners.

Yea honestly if I could do it over I would have gone with a different first becker than the 2 I have. Still a great knife though!

The 14 is a good choice for the purpose. The 11's handle is a bit short for a use that involves a lot of slippery mess.

I would never think of a BK15 as long and unstable.
Having had my hands in deer and other small animals almost every year since I was a kid I find a blade between 4.5 to 6 inches about perfect. my personal preference is for a thinner tip.

I'm interested as to why? Seems long and unstable but I am new to the game so am unsure.

The 15 is anything but unstable. I have batoned cross and with grain with mine, snap cut, used the spine to smack and break things etc etc. Mine was even shot like a bullet by a buffer straight into my concrete garage floor tip first. Sparks flew but the tip was just dulled, no breakage, denting, or chipping. I was stunned by that... The trailing point is an absolute fantastic blade shape for a variety of tasks and is conducive to field dressing tasks. It really is deceiving how tough the knife is. It is one of my top favorite Beckers. As Ethan has said an upswept tip is for speed, while a downswept tip is for power. Either way the knife excels at wood crafting type tasks for me, and a general consensus with my vote included states that it is a very good knife for food prep. I really dig how it slices through meat especially. I do not dismiss the 16 or the 17 either as great blades, but Ethan really outdid himself when he put together the tweeners. To me the 15 is one of the best production belt blades out there. I even EDC'd mine for quite some time. I rave because for me its been a fantastic blade that has surpassed my expectations.

Long story short, for what you are wanting a knife for, the 14, 15, 16, or 17 would probably serve you well. They each have their own camps but they all are fantastic, bang for your buck blades.

SIDE NOTE: I know you are wanting a knife for cleaning game... but you really need a 9..... ;) Who says you cant clean a turkey with a 9" blade?!

The 14 is great, the 16 also great. But if you don't get a BK9 than you're doing it wrong. You need a BK9. You can't not have a 9. If you need to field dress game you just walk up to the animal and show them your 9 and they will gladly crap out their guts and climb out of their skin for you.

Ack y'all! I want every becker! I've been looking through all of the threads recommending dressing knives but for some reason I just don't want to steer away from becker. I was leaning towards the 14 but now I have the 16 in mind. I love my 2 for camping but it is a pain to lug around at times. So now between the 14 and 16, which have you used to dress/skin deer?

Either will work fine. Dressing game can be done with almost anything. When I was a kid my little brother and I got to help my dad and mom as they quartered out a cow moose with nothing more than a Bucklite 426.

I just didn't find much use for my 14. I have the BK9 and it handled most things in camp and did an AMAZING job of it. Love, love, love my 9! I tried making use of the 14 for smaller tasks but my traditional folders always seemed to the job better. The 14 felt caught in no man's land. Not big enough to do wood processing, too big for small detail or cooking tasks.

Don't get me wrong, it can do it all if it was your only blade. It's just that I always seemed to have another option that felt more suited to the task

I know a lot of people love the 14 and I wanted too but I think mine is headed for the electronic bay.
