Been browsing around here for a while. Thought I would say "hi" and ask a couple questions, if that would be o.k.

I have hunted and fished all of my life, and have never really thought I was a Buck collector. But after digging around in my knife box the other day I realized over the years I have picked up several Buck knives. I've noticed a lot of discussion on different kinds of steel used by Buck over the years, such as 440C, 425 and 420. My question is, I have three 105 Buck's. Two are three lined Bucks with no date stamps, and one is a two line. I was just wondering if anyone knows what type of steel was used in them.

Another question is when did they quit using the burgundy or reddish colored spacer that comes down behind the guard on the knife, where your thumb would rest if you held the knife upside down.

Sorry I don't have a picture. Thanks for any help.

Mike

Mike,

I'll take a shot at your questions. The two lines are all 440C and dates back to 1967-1971. The reason for adding USA was marketing to Canada began in '67. The three line stamp was to add the model number and originally began as a tip down stamp (ie read with the tip down). Sometime in 1972 the orientation was changed to the current tip up three line stamp. In 1986, year dates began.

Around 1982 Buck switch to 425M from 440C. So the question is do you have a 440C three liner or a 425M three liner? During the 70s and early 80s the number of burgandy micarta spacers being used was reduced from four, then to three, and then to two.

All my three liners are of the 4 spacer configuration and I believe its safe to say they are 440C.

Anyone else chime in but I'd say if you have three and/or two spacers they are 425M.
420HC production began for fixed blades around 1992 and of course from 1986 on you know year of production.

Thanks so much for the information, Flatlander. I can't believe all the Buck knowledge that you guys know.

In looking at most of my Buck's, they seem to have 4 spacers. So I assume then that would be 440.

I also noticed that the three 105's that I have all have a little different shaped blade. Maybe its just the way they were ground at the factory. I will have to take a picture of my Bucks and post them some time. No big collection, but some how I managed to pick up several over the years.

Thanks again,
Mike

I can't either. Flatlander's OK, just watch out for 334dave...

Buck switched model numbers over the years...If you have a really early 105, it won't look anything like the "newer" 105...

Pics are a must to identify Bucks. The spacer material and color seem to have changed over the years, too...as well as the number. Are all yours aluminum guard & pommel or brass??? Seems like I read someone here say that stainless was used, too...

Wack,Welcome. If your index finger touches the micarta spacer while holding the knife in a normal manner and has a 3 line stamp. Then is was made from 1972-1979 certainly 440C.If it has one black spacer in the finger guard and two in the pommel w/ a 3 line stamp. It could be EITHER 440C or 425M.A few models were made w/ that configuration,102,119,120 not many others but a chance. Then the spacer configuration changed in 1981 to code the 425 usage. To I think one black spacers in the pommel and the same one black in the front. Then you know the year dates started in 1986.I writing w/o my notes.I'll check this when I get back home.Enjoy your stay.DM
