Hey guys, I'm new here and have recently purchased a BK2 and am really happy with it. I have not stripped the factory coating and was curious as to how necessary/often the application of oil to the blade is? Is 3in1 oil appropriate?
Any suggestions/recommendations are greatly appreciated.:)

Most any oil will work but mineral oil seems to be the cheapest and available at every pharmacy. Put a little mineral oil on a rag or paper towel and wipe down the knife. Make sure the knife is clean and dry before wiping it down. Do that after your done using the knife.

Thanks fellas. I just wanted to be sure not to accelerate the degeneration of the coating.
On that note, what will it take to make the spine of the blade compatible with a fire steel?

Not sure about the spine, but I'm a big fan of mineral oil. Quick wipe down at the end of the day does the trick and since I use my knives for food prep regularly I don't have to worry about ingesting any sketchy chemicals.

I've been using Break-Free CLP on my guns and knives for over 20 years. Even onboard ships in a heavy saltwater environment. It may be over kill for normal knife maintenance but as I always have it on hand for my firearms I still use it on my knives with fantastic results.

Only down side is it is expensive but for a blade you don't need to use much. A few ounce bottle lasts a very long time.

For blades or guns your not using and are storing or displaying the Break-Free "Collector" oil is supposed to provide five years of protection. I haven't tried it yet but have some on order. I trust the brand so I feel comfortable recommending it. The really nice thing about it is it isn't a wax or grease and you don't have to remove or clean it off before using the knife or firearm once you take it out of storage. Its ready for use at any time.

Hope this helps.

Edit: Break-Free CLP is a synthetic oil so I wouldn't recommend using it on a blade that you use for food prep.
