Been lurking here for a while trying to decide what I wanted and figured now that I have some knives on the way it was time to post.

I live in the central Cailornia valley but love to hike/camp in the surrounding mountains (especially the Sierras) and am seeking the ultimate survival/defensive knife.

At first I was looking at AKs, BAS, WWIIs, M-43s etc but these all seem to referred to as "chopping" knives that are heavy with a balance not favored for defensive use. That got me looking at the Sirupatis and Gelbu Specials. In the end I couldn't decide on one and ordered a CAK and a 20" Sirupati (kinda wishing I stuck with my initial leaning, 18") so basically a heavy chopper and an equally heavy (due to the 20") but better balanced shortsword. Can't wait to try them out, I might still order and 18" GS and 18" Siru later on in my quest for a great all-around knife. I'm a fairly large man, 6'2" 240 with a lot of upper body strength so I'm hoping the 20" won't be too unwieldy. I know the CAK is a popular knife with a lot of fans around here, what about 18-20" Sirus and GS? What do you guys think of them?

Welcome to the board:)

I like all of the Sirus. Of the standard staple khuks, I think the Siru family behaves the most differently as you go up and down in size. What I mean is that the 12" version feels and behaves like a slightly choppier belt knife. The 15" version feels like a pure fighter. The 18" version is a nice heavy duty machete. The 20" version feels like a real battle blade. The 25" version could take a charging horse out at the knees:D
