Hello all. Im new to this forum and im in the market for my first knife. Ive had alot of cheap folders and as you all know, you get what you pay for. Needless to say all of them have broken. Im looking to get a good folder without going over $70. I was looking at benchmade models 10400 -Pika, 10300 - monochrome and the 10210 - mini ambush. Are these any good? Im open to try other brands as well.

Look at the Boker Subcom... they are coming out with some new variants. It has a decent working steel, nice fit and finish and good overall design.

Yes, all of those are very good choices. You might also want to look at the Benchmade Griptilian series and some of the offerings from Spyderco, such as the Delica.

What size are you looking for, and do you have any preerences with anything? Materials, lock, etc? Also, are there any heavy task or odd things you might use it for, or a specific application you have in mind?

Im just using it for everyday tasks. Possibly for self defence. As for blade length something under 4 inches is good. No preference on material.

Try a Spyderco Dallarra. About $55.00 on eBay, VG10 Serrated or non. Nice solid first knife!!! L8R... ~baba~

I think the best buy for a strong quality folder is the Byrd Cara Cara. I am still amazed it only cost a little over $20 every time I use it.

Here are some of my EDC (every day carry) favorites.

Byrd Meadowlark in G-10 - $25.00 price range

Voted Blade Magazine value of the year. You won't find a nicer made knife in similar materials for that price anywhere, highly recommended. Also see the Cara Cara, which is the same knife with a longer blade and handle.

C87P_scorpius_2.jpg

Spyderco Scorpius - $60 price range

This is one of the really comfortable, awesome cutting ability, slim, easily pocketable knifes that really doesn't get enough attention because it looks funny. One of my favorite mid size EDC designs.

C66BK-4_Large.jpg

Spyderco Centofante IV - $45 price range

This is a nice, thin, light knife that looks good, and i happen to love the straight (wharnecliffe) blade shape for EDC tasks.

SC_C11PBK.jpg

Spyderco Delica - $45.00 price range

This is the no brainer EDC recommendation. Just a time tested and well loved design that works well. Many swear by it. Also available in stainless steel handles, and check out the Endura if you want the same knife, only larger.

BT-03-GPEBK.jpg

Blade Tech Pro Hunter Lite - $45.00 price range

These are just a really good all around design and the price is excellent.

B-BO589.jpg

Boker Subcom - $30.00 price range

They are a bit small for some things, but the design is excellent.

ks_leek_large.jpg

Kershaw Leek - $45.00 price range

This is another awesome design that is a favorite EDC for many. It's slim, built well, made in America with excellent warrenty and all that good stuff. It's has an assited opening feature similar to a switchblade, only not illegal.

KS1635.jpg

Kershaw Mini Cyclone - $50.00 price range

Another assited opener, but this one has the option to turn it off, which i think is awesome. Cool design.

The Benchmades you suggested are all great ideas as well, and you should also check out the Griptillian series. If you want to know anyhting specific about any of the knives I posted, just say so. I've owned all of them but the Cyclone, and can tell you more about them.

I have the mini-ambush and had a thread very similar to this when i joined this forum a couple months ago and I have been relatively unimpressed with the AUS 8 steel while being VERY impressed by the rest of the knife especially the rolling lock. this used to be my standard EDC until I invested 45$ in a Spyderco native I ...the S30V steel kicks the crap out of the AUS8 for sharpness and general toughness, and over this time I have been converted from the Benchmade or bust camp into, YAY SPYDERCO!!!!

Thus, I must recommend the Spyderco Native I, even if you hate lockbacks as much as i do. And I do hate lockbacks.

Howdy again... Go on eBay and type in (folding knives) then shop till you drop. Find the options your looking for as well as the looks you find desierable in the price range you can afford. After you have shopped on eBay then go the individual knife manufactuers web-sites and see what yhey have to say. You will be able to sort it out. Hell, maybe you will find a couple knives you like and get them all!!!! Peaceout!!! ~baba~

Wow. I would like to thank everyone for the quick, innformative replies. All the knives that have been posted so far look great. Well i guess I have to start narrowing down the options.....this is going to be hard:D

I'm a huge Kershaw fan. I've tried a lot of different high end knives, but I must say the Leek/Chive are awesome introduction knives. They are nicely priced, solid, sexy looking and the assisted opening is both useful and 'cool'. They come in a nice assortment of colours, and you can even swap the pocket clip to put the blade in tip up position for a quick draw.

Good luck!

I went to wallmart today and saw that they had the kershaw leek and some spyderco models I was considering. After handling most of them, I have to say, the kershaw leek was the perfect size. I wasnt to big and it wasnt to small. Its a knife you could put in you pocket and forget about till you need it. I will most likley be getting the leek.

Also J85909266 how well does the blade on the leek hold up? Do you have to sharpen it often due to the thin blade? What do you use to sharpen you leek, I was looking at the spyderco sharpmaker.

The Sharpmaker is a great choice, as is the Leek. I have 8 Leeks  and I rotate them through my EDC set up. The Leeks come in a wide variety of blade steels which have a corresponding price scale. The standard Leeks with 440A steel can be had for $35 or more. The ZDP Leek is the top of the line for $140 and up. THe best value in my Opinion is the S30V blade/G10 handled Leek for about $70 online. Check out my collection of Leeks at this thread! http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=427460&highlight=leeks

I am very proud of them and I am a very loyal Kershaw Knut!

All great choices, I love my Delica. At first I thought it as ugly, but now I love the look of it. Great steel, it sharpens great. I have a lot of more expensive knives, but this one ends up in my pocket the most. I also like my mini manix, I beat all my knives. I own a body shop and I cut, poke, pry and scrap stuff that should not be done with a knife. I beat my 100$ knife's as much as my 45$ knives. The Delica 4 is steel lined and it really adds to the strengh of this knife. A few swipes on the rods and its shaving sharp again. Go Delica 4 straight edge and never look back.
