Hey guys, been lurking for a while. I think I have the knifemakers bug (and it looks like it might be one of the more expensive bugs I have ever caught)... Was hoping you guys could help me with an equipment list to start. I have done some forging, but will wait to get into that. I just want to get started with a belt grinder, drill press and what else??? Belt grinders seem to be tough to find and even harder to figure out what attachments to start with. I don't have a lot of money, but my wife is willing to take a hit for me to get started. Still, about 2k in equipment seems high... What do you guys think? What are the go to tools I will need to get started?

to get started you need a hand drill minimum bench mount drill press better. a 4 inch angle grinder various files a hacksaw and some sandpaper. a o/a torch. and then if you want a 1/4 or 1/3 horse electric motor with a backing plate to put auto body disc's on this is just as handy as a belt grinder for doing bevel. I know a MS that does not even own a belt grinder he does everything with an angle grinder and disc grinder...........hope that helps.

I'll give you the same advise I give all new makers:
1) Do a search on your question (This one is asked about once a week)
2) Read the new maker sticky at the top of this forum page.
3) Get three books before you buy anything else, "The $50 Knife shop",by Wayne Goddard; "Step-by-Step Knifemaking",by David Boye; "The Complete Bladesmith",by Jim Hrusoulas.
4) Check out the knifehow site, www.knifehow.com , lots of info there.

Has anyone used that Flat Iron at HD for a knife? How did it turn out?
no no no
mild steel at best find a tool and die shop and see if you can by some flat stock of O1 or A2 that should not be too hard to come by
if you think you can wait 3 -4 days you can order just about any blade steel you can think of
i get just about all my steel online now

If you have someplace to set up a forge, it is accually cheaper to set up with a homemade forge and to start stock removal. You can do your "grinding" with files instead of power equipment. That's how I started for less than $1000 and most of that was a Peddinghaus anvil.
