I am new here and hoping to find some help.
A coworker of mine lost my knife i the snow last night. I was going to buy another one of the same but thought I would get opinions from people who know more than me about knives.
the knife I lost was a Myerchin with a marlin spike. http://www.myerchin.com/A377.html

I liked the all stainless design, and used the Marlin spike moderately.

I am an Arborist so I need a knife fro cutting ropes, plastic, and cardboard. The marlin spike is NOT a necessity but does come in hand for prying things and untying knots.

im not familiar with that particular company, but check agrussell.com

im sure you can find a knife to your satisfaction and they are a pleasure to deal with.

This one looks like it would do the job well.

Yes it DID do the job well. That is the same link that I posted above. lol

is this truly a good knife and I should just buy another? Or is there something better out there? I found it didnthold an edge well, and didnt cut rope all too well, that may have something to do with my sharpening skills though....?

A good leather man tool will perform these tasks well too. There are not a lot of knives out there with Marlin spikes although some of the tools on the SAK would probably work as well. I untie knots with the Philip's blade on my SAK Explorer.

Spyderco Endura or Delicia is exactly what you want. You can get a VG10 blade and plastic handle for 50$. VG-10 is a great steel for the sharpening impaired and takes a wicked edge.
I like the plain edge versions but they come in fully serrated or half and half as well.
Serrations are great for cutting lines ,webbing etc but not so good for fine detail work.
If you want a high end steel that almost never needs to be resharpened they come in ZDP 189 but they are more money and can be difficult to sharpen.

The marlin spike is NOT a huge concern for me. A good performer is. I like to carry in my front pocket if that makes a differnce? I am rough on stuff so plastic handles probably wont last long.

The more I work without my knife, the more I miss it. I have been thinking over the spike thing too, it was handy when I HAD to use it, and I like carrying a knife not too many others have.

So......

Here are 3 that I have looked over;

Myerchin
Spyderco Salt series
AG Russel SeaMaster

are there any other sailors you'd recommend?

Which one of the ones above, or a different knife, and WHY?

It should be noted that the Spyderco Salt series is rust proof, if that is a desirable attribute I would go for one of those. Spyderco's serrated blades cut like the dickens as well.
Otherwise the knife you had was plenty good, they use premium steel and are probably constructed well enough.

I know the Boye is custom but I dont like the look of how the spike is mounted. I will do some more looking at it though.

What makes you recommned this knife over the others?
