I didn't see a "introduce yourself here" forum and there is probably one, but I never wear my glasses so I can't see sh@# as it is...LOL! Anyways, new guy here, love knives (don't have a lot of them), love guns, love Harley's, love fishing and hunting, love my wife and kids. As you can see by my username I am in someway affiliated with the Marine Corps and have been for some time, the "bass" is for large mouth bass and not a bass guitar! I'm a pretty simple guy, I suffer from ADD and sure my knife fetish will pass and I'll come back to it in full circle just like every thing else I do. Last go around it was building guns, still have my AR-10 I need to finish, before that was learning how to super tune bait casting reels, but now I'm looking at another deployment with a completely different mission and need to have more on me than my M4 and side arm which ignited the knife fire again.

I carry, everyday, a Benchmade 5000SBK Auto Preisidio and have a 9500SBK Auto Stryker in reserve. At one point and time I had an Infidel, but never ever carried it and decided I never would so I sold it. So....here's the predicament, I carry the benchmade and will do so down range. I'm considering getting their SOCP dagger (to carry center line on my kit); however, I've seen some really nice ones out there by other builders. If you have a recommendation on another thing flat dagger like the SOCP I'm all ears! I've looked at the Benchmade Adamas for a "concealed carry" blade when I drop my kit and it's just me, my side arm and a blade. The only catch to that is I will also carry center line a tuf writer or Benchmade pen on my uniform.

Paranoid? Maybe, just a little, but have you seen all the blue on green attacks. I think I'll be working with a better group of professionals than that; however, you never know who is around you in the civilian population!

So a few I've considering is a Strider SLCC (if I can find one), Dawson Razorback, CR Yarborough or Pacific, Kramer has a few I like, Zero Tolerance has a nice line up...

So, as you can see I'm partial towards Benchmade, have had mine for years, still sharp as all get out, plus they give me 20% percent and I have a code for up to 50% off so it saves me a few bucks. Through my last few days of research though I have come across some quality builders and down right bad @$$ knives that I would love to carry. So if you all have a recommendation or two I'm listening and I hope to get to know a few of you all.

Welcome to Bladeforums! I'm going to move your thread over to General Knife Discussion. This sub forum is dedicated to Traditional Folders and Fixed Blades.

Thanks Peregrin, I am the market for a fixed blade and that why I post that there. Guess I misunderstood the forum. Thanks for the clarification GO87....

Oh and I forgot to mention above Winkler has some really nice blades I've been eyeballing. So as you can see my price range is vast as our the builders/manufacturers. I'm just looking for something that is tough, rugged, sharp, will stay sharp and take a beating. Meaning it will be there when/if I need it and can be depended upon.

Prime example my last turkey hunt I had my presidio on my, still had a bird flopping on the ground. So I stand on it's head, grab my blade and go to cut it's head off, expecting to simply drag it across and it would end that. Wasn't the case! It's sharp, but not sharp enough for that so...you get the point.

Thanks again all!

Welcome to BF!

Are you trained in any knife based self defense? If so use what you were trained in.

If not....it really doesn't make any difference. Get a knife that is good for what you will be using it for 99.99999999% of the time....not the knife fights you will be getting into 0.000000001% of the time.

I've no experience with them, but i think you want a Busse. Quite unanimously some of the toughest knives around. ZT's fixed blades are solid and so are Beckers. You could also try the knife makers market, lots of good stuff in there.

You know I actively try to get in fights, but no one ever wants to fight me. Maybe its because I'm 6'4" 260lbs....

Back on topic, I agree with marcinek. Buy what you are comfortable with. The best knife for self defense knife is the one you have on you when the situation arises. I myself have knife fighting/defensive training. ZT fixed blades are knives are nice, very beefy. Hell I carry a KA-BAR when I'm out in the wilderness. Whatever fits your hand.

I have some training in knife use and combative martial arts. The primary purpose is for use in a CQB when a gun is not the answer (collateral damage) or it turns into a hand to hand combat situation and a good blade will give me the upper hand.

Thanks for the input on the Busse, never heard of them, and will take a look at them.

You don't need a knife at your stature when you have the HULK SMASH! While down range I will carry at a minimum two blades (one in my pocket...my Presidio and a fixed blade for concealed carry or as a belt knife).

I appreciate the welcomes and various input...anyone else?

Welcome and thank you for your service. If you like the CQB tool from Benchmade, you might consider the higher grade version designed by the same guy but sold by Spartan Blades. It looks almost identical but uses a higher grade stainless steel, 154cm. It's also roughly twice the price before your discount. Comes in black and desert tan.

If you want to spend a bit more, I would look at Winkler knives. There's a guy here that's used Winkler knives and tomahawks in CQB situations cleaning up drug cartels in Mexico. He's used a Winkler tomahawk to penetrate kevlar armor straight into a baddy's shoulder.

And just in case you consider a hawk:

harkamus- Thanks for the thanks...I love what do and have been at it for just over 16 years :) I consider it a privilege! I'd look at that Spartan blade (as the SOCP by Benchmade was already on my go list); however, I didn't realize (honestly I didn't read) it was made the same guy. Even though I'm a Marine I'm working to get a few of us in the SOCP program as each branch of service brings a different capability especially where combatives are concerned as we all have different programs. My guys think I'm nuts for wanting a hawk, but IMO it adds a completely different dimension (hell, just the initial shock factor would be priceless) to the fight. I really dig the Winkler knives and have to say you're on your game...solid recommendations IMO and from what little I know! Thank you and much appreciated.

Those Busse's look to be solid blades too, but seem to be a little harder to come by. I've seen one in the Busse picture only thread that I really dig as far as the overall shape of the blade and the complete knife itself, but have no idea what model it is.

sounds like you needed to sharpen your knife, no knife stays sharp forever.

post a link to the picture and someone can identify the Busse you were looking at.

I made a similar recommendation in another thread here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...blade-for-police-duty?p=12385707#post12385707

You can find more info about the guy that used the hawk in CQB in that reply. He does a lot of work with police, special forces, military in Mexico.

I want to say it was one of his post is actually how I discovered this forum. I Googled something and it came up in my search. Thanks again!
