Depends on what material you are working on... brass, being soft, wouldn't be a good choice for steel but would work just fine as a leather or wood punch.
 
Brass punches are used when you don’t want to mar up the surface of the pin you are attempting to push. Used in conjunction with a brass, wooden, or rubber hammer. :D
I had a whole set of brass punches in the arms room for machine gun maintenance and repair.
 
Yes! I've used scraps of brass to avoid marring surfaces, and appropriated a small brass rod as an improvised punch.
