Hi! I've always liked knives etc., but don't know too much about them. I am very new to this website (and so I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this) and all the talk about different types of steel etc. is definitely confusing to me😅 I was hoping someone could give me the basics on how the website works and where to start, if I'm just starting to get more into this hobby? I found this website in my search for a good place to get a custom made bowie knife, any recommendations there as well?

Thank you in advance for any help or responses.

How this website works is easy.

Hang out here in the General forum - read all the posts - buy the latest and greatest steel & go nearly into the poor house to do so.... ;) :D

Then, after a whole lot of time running around chasing the dream - come to the understanding that:
- Carbon - good old rusty steel - takes a wicked sharp edge without a whole lot of effort.
- Sandvik 14C28n is really, really, really good steel - for something that doesn't rust. AUS8 and 440C and Buck's 420 are also kick-ass steels that won't break the bank.

Stay away from the higher end knives - until you can spot a fake - otherwise, it's all too easy to get burned.

Kershaw is probably the best company out there right now - as far as the wide assortment of products they offer. It's pretty hard to go wrong with a Kershaw - but - if/when you do, you won't be out a whole lot - and - you'll probably end up with a more than decent "beater". My old "Lever Lock" (4510) is a good example. I've had it for about 30 years. It never did do anything particularly well (except slice radishes - the thing is a radish assassin) - but - it does a whole lot pretty well.

Welcome - both of you.

Welcome aboard, there's lots of great makers here that can make your wildest dreams come true (at least when it comes to knives). The knife makers market is a good place to start, and there's also a spot there you can post a thread with what you're looking for.

True words spoken here. Fairly new myself and folks here have been polite and knowledgeable with answers to my questions. Yes the many steels used in knives can be challenging. This is the place to learn from collectors and users alike. Good to ask opinions on makes and models before jumping in. Myself looking to build a smaller collection with quality instead of quantity. So much to choose from but this forum will make things a lot easier. Hope you enjoy being here!

Browse the Knife Exchange here. Look at the offerings from different makers to find one that has a style you like.

Then look in the Exchange feedback subforum to see what other users have said about them good or bad. If you're unsure you can make a thread out here in General about experiences with certain makers. You can find a lot of helpful feedback here. My most used fixed blade is from a maker that was very active around 2018 then not so much recently or I'd drop a recommendation already.
