Hi

I am new on here, and have made a knife for the first time last saturday. I am an aprentice ornamental blacksmith.

I was wondering what you thought, this was just made out of a blank of sweedish bandsaw steel, very high quality tool steel. But am going to make one forged next, hopefully in a month or so!

I have inserted a few pics of the knife I made any oppinions much apriciated?

Pic of knife and sheath I made:

Pic of knife close up, with a bog oak handle polished with beeswax, from my bees:

Welcome Buzzy Bee,

I like that design. That would be a nice little camp knife. I like the way the belly extends well below the handle, but it kindly looks like you might need a choil or something right there where the blade meets the handle. I'm guessing the blade's a little under 3" or so...same for the handle. (???)

What kind of wood is that? And what are those spots on the blade....is that deep pitting that you couldn't get out?

All in all a pretty nice job for a first time endeavor.

Indeed Busy Bee welcome to Blade Forums! The finest source for blade information and opinions on the planet! Keep making blades!!
Enjoy the forums!!!
:-)
Peace.

Cheers for all your replys! and making me welcome!

The blade is about 3" and the same for the handle, good guess!

Whats a Choil, sorry but I am a total novice!?

The pitting on the top of the blade was from the recycled tool steel that I used, I could rub it all out, but I like the texture so left it in, I will try to get better pics for you.

Cheers

I forgot to say the handle is made from bog oak, it could be 200years old or 1000 or more years old, and anywhere inbertween. It has a real nice old dark colour and was from in a bog in kent! I polished it up with pure beeswax from my own bees and riveted it on with brass rod.

first off, that's a heck of a lot better than I could do. And Welcome to Blade Forums!

Second, bog oak is a very beautful material, often used on high-end limited edition knives. Boker does some in Bog Oak, and charges a huge premium. Did you collect the bog oak yourself by any chance?

Cheers for the compliment, I am happy with it for a first attempt, but it needs a little more work, polishing etc.

A mate supplied the bog oak, not sure where he got it from but he is a carpenter, so probably through a contact, it is great stuff and looks really nice, I will definateley try to use it again.

Cheers
