. the knife is a bulldog brand baby saddlehorn trapper ( with what they call brindle bone ) that surprisingly only costed 9$, and would shock someone to find that out after holding it ( if you buffed off the China printing ) It came razor sharp, has zero blade play, and great fit and finish overall. ( sadly the clip blade was warped but I was able to fix it ). I had posted about fixing it, but it got moved to the maintenance gate. So now that I fixed it I thought you guys might be interested in it. ( it may be made in China since Jim frost acquired the old German brand name , but that just means you can afford to lose it ) if anyone has one of the other bulldogs I'd like to here what you thought of it. Cause so far I'm really impressed.

Very nice price point for as you say a well built knife I have yet to see or own one. But they remind me of a RR with your discription and I love most of the rr I have bought. For the longest time I when I was into modern folders it was always USA USA USA and ya know what I own a few of Chinese made and German made and Spanish made traditionals that hold their own with USA made knives. So I guess my point is enjoy it use is drool over it it's a great looking knife and now days I'd dosent matter where it's made.

I personally chose quality over country of origin.

With that being said, Made in the USA brands get my money first. Always important to support companies who put money in the pocket of American workers. Makers based in the USA (AG Russell) outsource some designs to other countries, but the quality remains high. Brands like Rough Rider put out some good bang-for-the-buck knives from my experience. It's a great way to get involved with all the different patterns to see what you like best. Just like modern folders, you usually start out with lower-cost models before gradually stepping up the price ladder. Before you know it, customs and handmades somehow end up in your collection. :)

At the end of the day, enjoy what you buy, whatever the price point!

You know I hate to say this because when Case is on point it is an excellent, very hard to beat knife in fit and finish, walk and talk, cover color and overall look, just everything about it. However, with their hit or miss QC that we experience these days Rough Rider IMO with two exceptions possible materials used in production (maybe because who knows what Surgical Steel really is) and the fact they are USA made Rough Rider is just as good as Case with a more consistent Fit and Finish. As an user (not a collectable) is a much better value for the price point. There I said it and am prepared to take abuse for what I just said. :D

The beauty of a free market is you spend your money where you think you are getting the best value for your dollar. I for one won't argue the value of the RR pocket knives, and other decent Chinese brands. My friend Chet is a die hard fan of the RR's and I see him abuse the ever lovin' dog poo out of them. They hold up pretty good. It takes Chet about two years to kill one. That Bulldog baby saddle horn is a pretty little knife, and I like pretty little knives that give good value! Use it well!

The steel in RR knives is 440a which can be heat treated to within 1 point of 440c. While I don't collect them they are Always razor sharp out of the box. It's a best buy knife imo.
The gateway to much more expensive knives. ;-))
Best regards

Robin

I agree I love to keep my money in house meaning USA and I try to but I can't argue when I'm getting a better knife of lately for less it's no brainier and I agree agian with you that at the end of the day enjoy what you buy no matter what

While I also prefer American made knives , pocket knives ( traditionals are pocket knives, while others are folding knives ) are a different story. It's hard for me to bring myself to use a shiny pretty knife, so it helps for it to be of an expendable price. ( in general I prefer high value knives, like my American made bucks, a 110,425 and current edc a 283 and a 482 all 20$ or less with the exception of the 110 ) probably my most favorite traditional that I need another of is my well beat up victorinox Gardner ( a 12$ knife that I hope to find in green )

It wouldn't surprise me at all that it's a great knife. I've got a few Colt branded knives that are incredibly made for the price.

I collect the original Bull Dog brand knives (German made) and they're hit or miss in terms of fit & finish.

I really like the looks of colts offerings. The buckshot bone really looks nice, so do their red white and blue knives with the titanium and frosted blades. The one I really like that I've been wanting is their little tadpole lockback.

I've got a swell center jack in buckshot bone that is fantastic, but if you really want a nice one check out the railsplitter in amber bone.

I have an AG Russel Rancher in Coral, Rucarta.... Made in China.

It's a great little knife. I really like it a lot.
