Hello everyone. I hope that soon I ll be buying new knife. Please dont laugh at me for being a mall ninja. I just want a hard use folding knife for sake of owning it. I m looking into Microtech DOC which is a collaboration of Marfione and Strider. I like design and reputation of Strider hard use but I dont like its simple look so I want something more fancy looking and thats why I m looking into DOC. The other possibility is Select Fire and just maybe CRK Umnumzaan.
The question is which of those to choose and are they really able to call themselves hard use? They look tactical but I just wanted to ask.
Thanks.

Those are actually all fine knives, no problem if that's your choice. The Zaan is a different look of knife than a DOC or Select Fire, I have had/have all of these and IMO the Zaan is just a step above in overall 'niceness' it is just like a fine watch or something it is so well made. Of all these my CRK knives in general, including the Zaan see much more use than any of the others ever did/do. And yes, despite what some may say, the Zaan is every bit as capable of hard use as any of the others you listed.
Enjoy your choice, all of these knives are nice knives and I'm sure you would be pleased with any of them you choose, my vote is obvious!

I will recommend the Starbenza if you are looking in that price range. It will give you a solution for all conditions and circumstances.

If you like tactical hard use, have you looked at the Hinderer xm 18? Great knives, absolutely for hard use.

And the sebenza is another one that's not shy to take a beating. A large 21 is as hard use as a knife gets.

I carry both every day and use them for everything. The Hinderer still looks like the day I got it. The large tanto micarta inlay sebenza has a few scuffs, but it's tough as nails.

Both in my opinion look way better than the strider knives.

Sebenza, Hinderer and ZT are out. I believe that they are excellently made but I just dont like their look. Its a matter of personal taste. The same I think for Strider but as I said, its too plain looking and I dont have enough money for customs of any of these brands. I already own BM Contego M4 and M390 version, Spyderco Military and Microtech Metalmark aluminum version and I dig Microtechs futuristic appearance. I just dont wanna get some lemon and I heard there are a lot of them between SF and DOC. I also hope they are really able to withstand some lets say hard use if it will be needed.

Neither the Select Fire or DOC are what you would call pedestrian knives, in looks or in the hand. The Select Fire would be my preference of the 2, having owned one before. It was a well made and good feeling knife but it rode very high in the pocket and that bothered me. I can't stomach the DOC. It feels off balance and it's just too goofy for me. YMMV and I would suggest handling either of these particular knives before buying them. If you want something that is a nice knife with unusual looks check out Kizer. They make noce knives at affordable prices and do some outstanding and unusual looking ano. Also, check Lionsteel. The SR1 or SR2 Ti would both be good choices, or even the aluminum handled versions.

I have a DOC. Its a heavyish knife. Its a unique look and works very well.
I have one with the "skelton FU clip" and while it isn't the most comfortable, its crappiness is a little overblown.
Mine has a very strong detent compared to every other knives that I have used. So you might have some problems with the lock bar or the thumb studs. It'll still be easy to flip. I have very strong hands so I didn't have a problem, but it is noticeable

I'd have no worries about calling this a "hard use" knife as much as I dislike the term. It shouldn't fail on you with abnormal abuse. Look at their SOCOM Delta also. Very good (there's a nutnfancy review on the socoms that I'm too lazy to link)

However the one thing you should look up on and made very aware about is Microtech's reputation for customer service. It's probably the most noticeable stain on their reputation. But they do make a fantastic knife.

edit to save space: While I disagree with bigfatts opinion on the DOC ergo's he is right where that it isn't a very "public friendly" knife. Because it looks so cool is why it might draw some undue attention.

I m sorry I sound like a spoiled brat but I dont like look of Lionsteel also and I like that threatening look on knives. I m more of a collector and mall ninja than user. The customer service is another thing I m scared at Microtech. For me the knife needs to be qualitetly made and I have to like its look. In this case: tacticool, hard use, little bit futuristic, threatening, yet classy. Ex. BM Contego M390.

If I could go back in time I would have saved up and bought myself a crk when I was 16/17. I'm 30 now and lived all those years without owning such a great tool. You are missing out by passing on crk Hinderer man. I know everyone has their own taste.

I feel the same way. Although in my younger years I would have pawned my Hinderer to have "fun"

Sebenza, ... but I just dont like their look. Its a matter of personal taste.

Why I said Starbenza. I opted for the Starbenza because I wanted a Sebenza with more character to it. You will never regret such an acquisition. I carry my Starbenza now (after safe-queening it) and in doing so the beauty comes through and I realise there is so much to love/appreciate. Like someone else said, I also feel I should have bought one ages ago.

Be careful not to judge a knife on pictures alone. When you handle a knife things change.

See how good a Starbenza can look ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57imBXUrmyA

So now its between CRK Umnumzaan and MT DOC. Recommendations? Strider is out because of their reputation on fit and finish, customer service and Mick Striders past. Yes, I know DOC is a collaboration between Anthony Marfione and Mick Strider.

Umnum hands down over DOC. It will out perform, out last, and hold its value much better than the DOC. Far better warranty. Also feels better in hand and pocket. Consider a Wilsoncombat star patterned zan. A little more flashy.
