I didn't know where to put this but it is leather work focused and to stay in the spirt of bladeforums I threw in one of my knives for the pictures.
I got a new Smith & Wesson M&P .45 for Christmas.
With the way the world is any more, I want to be prepared. I have an LC9S that is a great little piece but my wife carries it most of the time. I'm getting more and more paranoid with every new terrorist attack or mass shooting that takes place.
The chances are slim to none that I'll ever need a gun for that type of situation but I'd sure hate to have a pocket gun if the off chance I find myself and family in a crowded theater that is getting shot up. But the list of victims who thought this as well is getting longer and longer.
I've carried a S&W 1911 PD Commander for the last couple of years and really love that gun but it is a lot of gun for no more ammo count than it has. I wanted a .45 just because I love them. I don't think they will kill you any deader than a 9mm but I shoot them really well, have confidence in them and really like the extra bullet weight and frontal area.
The problem for full size carry is finding a holster that fits, hugs your body tight, has easy access and great retention and an important factor for me is looks. I don't like a tactical look. Regardless of how we avid shooters feel about it looks of assault weapons and tactical stuff can offend ignorant people. And if you have a mishap where your shirt rides up or wind blows it up and it exposes your weapon for a glance a super uber tactical "assault" holster can get the cops called on you, right wrong or indifferent. Or it can give people a bad (worse) feeling about you.
Respectable, mellow gear that works does help with the typical stereotype from our ignorant counterparts that don't agree with our carry choice.
I could never find what I wanted in stores and you can't hardly try on every holster and carry it for a few days to see how you like it. I decided I needed to learn how to make my own and after some investment in both time and money I'm going to try and never buy a holster again.
I've made a couple practice runs on holsters with both Kydex and leather and here is my finished product of a perfect holster for me.
It is fully lined, wet formed leather with a piece of my Cape Buffalo leather for a front. I also made a mag carrier that looks like a pocket knife sheath. They are very rigid and I've carried them for a few days now and I'm really happy with how they turned out both with function and looks.
The knife is of my own make as well and it has some serious miles on it now.
Happy New Year and thanks for looking,
Todd
