I didn't know where to put this but it is leather work focused and to stay in the spirt of bladeforums I threw in one of my knives for the pictures.

I got a new Smith & Wesson M&P .45 for Christmas.

With the way the world is any more, I want to be prepared. I have an LC9S that is a great little piece but my wife carries it most of the time. I'm getting more and more paranoid with every new terrorist attack or mass shooting that takes place.

The chances are slim to none that I'll ever need a gun for that type of situation but I'd sure hate to have a pocket gun if the off chance I find myself and family in a crowded theater that is getting shot up. But the list of victims who thought this as well is getting longer and longer.

I've carried a S&W 1911 PD Commander for the last couple of years and really love that gun but it is a lot of gun for no more ammo count than it has. I wanted a .45 just because I love them. I don't think they will kill you any deader than a 9mm but I shoot them really well, have confidence in them and really like the extra bullet weight and frontal area.

The problem for full size carry is finding a holster that fits, hugs your body tight, has easy access and great retention and an important factor for me is looks. I don't like a tactical look. Regardless of how we avid shooters feel about it looks of assault weapons and tactical stuff can offend ignorant people. And if you have a mishap where your shirt rides up or wind blows it up and it exposes your weapon for a glance a super uber tactical "assault" holster can get the cops called on you, right wrong or indifferent. Or it can give people a bad (worse) feeling about you.

Respectable, mellow gear that works does help with the typical stereotype from our ignorant counterparts that don't agree with our carry choice.

I could never find what I wanted in stores and you can't hardly try on every holster and carry it for a few days to see how you like it. I decided I needed to learn how to make my own and after some investment in both time and money I'm going to try and never buy a holster again.

I've made a couple practice runs on holsters with both Kydex and leather and here is my finished product of a perfect holster for me.

It is fully lined, wet formed leather with a piece of my Cape Buffalo leather for a front. I also made a mag carrier that looks like a pocket knife sheath. They are very rigid and I've carried them for a few days now and I'm really happy with how they turned out both with function and looks.

The knife is of my own make as well and it has some serious miles on it now.

First of all good job on the set-up. If you don`t mind me asking where did you get the Cape leather? Second I agree 100% with everything you said. These days people take safety for granted. I also like to have a equalizer just in case I need it. I think you should not have any problems with equipping your self for all of your leather good needs. Your work looks very clean and professional. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you and thanks for posting.

The Cape Buffalo leather is self harvested from a 2007 Africa trip. I'm the big guy on the left.

The holster is also very sentimental to me. I will never be able to afford Africa again so I only have so much Cape leather. Now a little piece of my once in a lifetime trip can go with me everywhere.

Nice job. The wife has a new S&W Shield and we are building a similarly styled holster for it right now.

Great work! I think you picked a good project and did a terrific job with that leather you're sentimental about.

I agree with you about not going for a tactical look for your gear. Although most who would be alarmed will be alarmed no matter what your holster looks like, just on the basis of what's in it. Being here in the west like we are, I like the idea of our leather gear, looking like something from another era, and worn (that cape leather has a rugged look even now). People also seem to feel less menaced by brown than by black so good choice there. When I ride, I carry my 1911 in a 1912 full flap, swivel cav holster or my SP-101 in a full flap Dave made for someone else (lucky find online and my introduction to his work). They're plenty accessible for me and people are charmed by the anachronism (plus they can't really see much of what's in there).

Would you be willing to post a pic of the knife? Is it the same one on your FB page, lying up against the .410?

Thank you, Zieg..

The knife is the one next to the .410. It is my #1 profile with California Buckey Burl. It has gotten a workout this year and has field dressed everything from trout to bison and pretty much everything in between.

Well heck it didn't come out. Gotta start over. However it does fit my little Bersa. Only problem I'm not sure how much I can rock the turqouise thread Nichole used to sew er up.

Nice work! Love the Cape Buffalo! Just helped my Dad make his first holster and we used Cape on it. Gadsden - talk to Jerry at VanAmburg leathers. He usually has a lot of it and it is very reasonable compared to other exotics.

Hereya go Todd. Didn't fit Nichole's Shield ( working on version 2.0 right now) but it fits my little Bersa perfectly.

I think it is awesome. Even the thread! You mind if I pump your brain on how you get the tooled leather to stay open reliably without wet forming it to the gun?

Awesome holster! Those little Bersa .380's are great little guns as well.

You bet Todd, thanks. I do wet form the holster. All the molding is on the backside when the front has a lot of tooling. After the forming I bake the holster for 2 hours on a real low heat just like my sheaths, (technique is described in the stickies in my pancake deal). To wet form I'll wipe the gun down with WD 40 before and after and I've never had a problem with rust. If I end up doing more than a few for a specific gun, I get a blue gun.

Yeah I've carried that little Bersa for years. Bout wore most of the blueing off. Great trigger and very accurate little gun. I shoot it a lot and carry it more. Unbelievable quality for the price. Pardon the pun but definitly the most bang for the buck out there.

Here's an old pic. I was cutting up this oak burl to see if there was any knife handle material inside. Different holster of course

Nice holster Dave. Great style and stamping as always. Thanks for posting.

Nice job on the holster. It's pretty cool to see you able to use leather from an animal you harvested yourself.

The mag pouch is perfect too. I'd look at that and think it was a buck 110 pouch or something.
