A couple weeks ago I saw pics of a new grinder that Little Hen posted
over on the CKD. This design looked to be simple, but solid. Long story short, Two weeks later I have a few pics of my version of a good design. Smooth, solid, and versitle. Much better than my first homebuild. Whatdoyouthink?

one more. the flat platen was as hard as the rest of the grinder. Very handy though. Will tilt to any angle for offhand surfacing, or tilt 90 deg for a 2" wheel. then any attachment on a 1/2" shaft can be swapped out quickly.

Thanks for the comments, much more of a pleasure to grind on than my old one.

Looks like a clean design. I'm just wondering where the tension spring is located? How about posting a link to the drawings?
Lynn

Lynn;
The tention spring is located inside the square tubing under the tracking arm. No drawings, but if you are interested, send me a pm and I will tell you dementions and a few tips I learned.

Paul,

I can't PM and I'm not sure if you got my email, but if you don't mind I'd sure appreciate it if you would send your grinder dimensions and tips to me as well. My email is mrouten@hotmail.com

Thanks!

That looks like a great design. If you have not already done it I would think it easy to make another pole for the front with a 8 inch wheel and another a bit longer for a 3 inch wheel etc just adjust the pole length to suit the belt size.

Very adaptable design. Well done now lets see some of the knives you make with it.

Very nice and clean! I wonder how big a contact wheel you can use on that bad boy? That's a good looking platen.

Dave

Mr moore I am also interested in the wheel size. I can see if you keep moving the wheel center backwards along the shaft to allow the belt to adjust to the diamiter you could get a huge wheel. However
not knowing the scale of you pic and the belt size I can't even guess.

Jim steele a local knive maker in Perth has also made a nice grinder I have one of them. He set about having aluminium wheels cast at the local foundary when he started making his own. You seem to have the same skill for inovation and adaption.

I also like you variable speed pulleys. Thanks for posting the pics.

Great job man! Looks awesome, any problems with tracking?
Looks like you can build anything just by looking at pics!
I feel kinda proud.

Mike I have tried to email you, from the email you sent me. one went, the other came back. Will try again, or you email me again. As far as the size contact wheel you can run, the tool holder bar will slide in and out to adjust for for different tooling needs. I can slide in for 6" wheel, or out for small wheel. The flat platen will also rotate for a 2". If Ron is around, I am sure he or I can help anyone wanting specs. My email is junkmailpm@netscape.net. Thanks again Ron, and yes my platen had to be straightened or plumed to track correctly. Much better now!
