New Horizontal Grinding Attachment

My search for a horizontal grinder resulted in me building one. I got tired of hand sanding, dremeling, and drum sanding inside radius. The resulting attachment works on my Bader grinder with the addition of a hinge plate. The hinge plate allows the machine to tip on its side. The attachment is a modified Bader "Double Billy Roll." The work rest can be adjusted up and down over the entire belt surface. The rest wraps around the smaller wheel and to the side of the larger wheel. With the belt doubling back around the smaller wheel, I have been able to grind very tight rounds. The back contact wheel is two inches and the front is ½ inch. This combination works great!

The stand-alone machine I was looking at was very expensive compared to the cost of a hinge plate, billy roll, work arm, plus the modification for the work rest assembly. If any one is interested, I am looking into having the assembly manufactured and sold as a package. Let me know.

Any suggestions?

Andrew,

That is soooo totally cool. Having 2 contact wheels of differing radii is extremely handy.

For idea I guess a platen behind the straight part and maybe extend the work table around on the right a bit more. Then you'd have a slack area and a backed area on the belt.

But far be it from me to change anything on that baby!

SWEEEEEEEET ! really nice job bro ! When / if you make them.please let me know. Thanks .....RDT

Andrew,

Very, very nice looking. Is there any problems with the abrasive running against the face of the wheel? What is that wheel made of?

Looks like a very useful tool.

Sincerely,
Rob

You really shouldnt have posted that picture. Now you are going to be flooded with requests to make them for all of us!!!:D Think about a patent yet??:D Once again, GREAT GRINDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the positive feedback guys! I've been very excited too. No more cramped fingers. It will save me literally hours of messing around with the above-mentioned procedures. Now I start with a worn 120 or 220 and work down to my finish belt. I can go from 120 right to 600 or 800 grit. I'm not planning to use grits below 120 because I can hog off material with the bandsaw and contact wheel.

Steve, there is a small flat platen in the middle of this prototype. One change will be to make it more versatile.

Rob, I just called Bader about the back tensioning wheel and all of the people in the know are gone for the holiday. From my observation it is a hard woven synthetic. After a good bit of use the wheel shows some abrasive contact but no significant wear. I'm sure over time it becomes a wear component and will need to be replaced. From what I can see though, if the wear is fairly even it just reduces the diameter, which wouldn't affect its overall function for some time. I will let you know when the folks at Bader are back on Thursday.

Hey I like that. Gonna hve to try it out next time Im round your way.

Andrew,

Laying that down like that is a good Idea. Ed has had that set up on a bader for I don't know how long but he uses it in a verticle position works great for under cutting the gaurds on pronghorns and the large wheel is sized for the second curve in his handles. Eds' set up looks like it was made by the bader company but I don't know that for sure. I believe that he told me that he has replaced the idler wheel every two or three years. keep up the good work.

Andrew if you come to the point of manufacturing these, please let me know. Meanwhile, is the Billy Roll now available from Bader? If so, that might go a long way towards solving the issue itseslf for now.

Thanks, that's a great modification,
Dave

Bill and Dave, as my initial post indicated this attachment is a modified Bader Double Billy Roll. I just cooked up the idea of turning it on its side and adding a wrap around adjustable work rest. Dave, the Double Billy Roll is a stock item from Bader. Bill, I appreciate the information about the wear rate on the tensioning wheel: Seems acceptable.

I had looked at the Double Billy Roll for some time thinking I could free hand on the top and bottom wheels. I just wanted to make something that created exact right angles along a radius (i.e. inside of backspacer on folders; finger side curves on fix blades and folders, etc.)

Otha, thanks for the reply. You, Alan and me have to get together again soon.
