New Hunter/Utility Drawings - Your Opinion

Hi there,

A bit of fun.

Been tinkering away with some ideas on a couple of hunters/utility pieces using the same base carved and worked handle, damascus fittings and steel blades with hamons. The idea would be a take down design to take up eventual "slack" on shrinkage if it happened.

I would like opinions on the aesthetics of the pieces, especially the "C Guard" which I am not sure works or not. But also on an eductaional front I would like the input of any makers out there on the technical feasibility of the collar/ferrule area.

Thanks,

Stephen

I like it! The C guard as flare to the design.. It give character to the piece.

Howdy There....!
Beautiful work, I really like the designs. Think that they would make two great knives, what about switching the gaurd from the bottom design to the top design to see how it would look. Great work....!

Stephen,

Very attractive designs!

Two things though, that You might consider changing.

The knob on the "C" guard......Your forfinger knuckle won't like it
at all. I'd suggest either eliminating it, or straightening the
finger guard a bit, to allow your finger more room.

I'd also suggest putting the palm swell closer to the center
of the grip.

Thanks,
Russ

Stunning images. Very reminiscent of the Russian art knives. I like 'em!

Thanks for the input.

Russ - you hit my concern regarding the C guard right on the head - I have thought about lengthening or doing it on a recurve - straightening up is a fantastic idea. On the palm swell - I was going for a kind of subtle carved "sub-hilt" - should this be further back from a practical point of view?

Coop - I am really pleased that you mentioned the Russian Art knives - part of my internal design brief was to try and render a more practical, useable piece, but drawing inspiration from some of those fantastic pieces of art the Russians produce. Your own superb images must also take credit for inspiring the layout and composition of the image.

Stephen,

The single finger grip is great as-is.

I'd give the back of the handle, that lays against the palm of your hand,
a subtle curve.

If we mentally devide the handle into thirds; the back of the second
third would be slightly curved. The first would be unchanged, and
the third would be just slightly less curved.

Thanks,
Russ

Russ,

Cheers, perfectly clear now. I'll give the changes a go in the coming days.

Thanks again,

Stephen

Beautiful designs Stephen. When you get around to having them made (I know it's only a matter of time ;) :p ) I'd be very keen to see the result.

On both knives I really like the overall lines and the handle shape. I love the "stippled" finish on the underside of the handles. It's quite beautiful and would probably aid in grip and in the tactile orientation of the knife in your hand. I've seen Ed Caffrey finish some of his handles that way - he's not the only one, of course - but he came to mind first.

I love the look of the C-guard and think Russ hit upon the possible ergonmic problem. I'd like to see what it woud look like without the "knob", straightened out slightly and shortened slightly (so that the net effect of staightening does not result in the guard extending any further below the level of the cutting edge).

I'm still debating the metal (damascus?) extension of the guard / ferrule along the top side of the handle. Visually, I think it works better on the C-guard model. I'm just pondering whether I would prefer the warmer "feel" of wood in that location versus metal. It's intriguing. And it's growing on me.

Cheers,

Roger

P.S. - Sure wish I could draw like you buddy - it's a lot easier to show someone your idea for a knife design than it is to describe it. Good stuff! :D
