I'm looking for opinions on a new deer/elk hunting knife for gutting/skinning application. My options so far include:

Fallkniven F1
Buck Vangard Master Series BG42

Which would work best? have I left out any better options in a production blade?

I own both. I greatly prefer the Vanguard for Elk. The larger handle and guard on the Vanguard work better for me. I also like the BG42 alloy and the shape of the Vanguard Master Series blade better. The F1 handle is a bit small for me.

I don't know where you can find a Vanguard Master Series anymore. They stopped manufacturing the Master Series (with BG42) over a year ago. I wouldn't get the Buckcote equivalent (I damaged one I tested). The normal 420HC alloy blade works OK.

The Cold Steel Master Hunter with carbon V blade is a good design. The AG Russell Deer Hunter with ATS-34 is also good (as long as you like a thin blade).

Thanks Jeff, I saw the Vanguard at a local sporting goods store yesterday. It's selling for $190.00 Canadian (approx. $125.00 U.S.). The F1 goes for $138.00 Canadian. Is the price for the Vanguard a good deal?

That price is GREAT!!!

If there is more than one, let me know.
I'd like to get another at that price.

I think the list price was around $200 USD
and I paid $175 USD for mine.

Be sure that you are talking about the Master Series model. That has a Green colored checkered handle and says BG42 on the blade. If the handle is green, but not checkered, and IS labeled BG42 on the blade it is a good deal, but not monumental. It is a pseudo Master Series made from left over parts rather than a true master series.

If the handle is brown wood colored or artificial rubber, it is an ordinary Vanguard with 420HC alloy blade and NOT a great price compared to the internet vendors.

Aren't some of the Marbles knives in 52100 steel around this price point?

deja vu all over again?
I replied to an identical post before I saw this one.
Nothing wrong with your choices here but you are approaching the price of some custom fixed blades. My "elk and mountain survival knife" is pictured on the link on the other post. My "deer" knife is a custom "madpoet" (by the late Mel Sorg) in D2 and cocobolo that I paid $125 for.
The Marble's are excellent and around the same price.

I would consider a Marbles knife because of the blade alloy and design, but I don't like the handle and tiny finger guard. You can get them to make you a modified version, but that means that you have to pay full retail price plus a customization premium.

Dozier makes good knives, but again, I want a better guard. I prefer BG42 to D-2 for the blade as well.
