I've looked and read about knives on this forum for awhile and decided to finally join. I'm looking for a new hunting knife that could also double as an emergency woods knife if need be. Price range is $125 or so. Ive looked at the Knives of Alaska Bush Camp Knife but I can't find much feedback. Any help would be appreciated. My current hunting knife is Kershaw Echo which is decent but a pain for me to resharpen for some reason.

I'm pretty new here too but welcome. Stick around, it's a great site.

Many affordable custom makers on here. I've placed an order with JK Knives.

Are you looking for something small that you might use to process game and so forth (I like the Becker BK11 for that)...

... or for a larger knife for clearing shooting lanes, making blinds, processing wood for fire, etc. (I like my Becker BK9 for that)...

You could get both for your budget. What do you have in mind?

Between the BK11 and the Bk9, but not the sharpened prybar of the BK2 ...

Doug Ritter's RSK Mk2 Perseverance for $125 (free shipping!). Based upon the Becker design, same handle, but made by the same folks that make TOPS and ESEE knives.

I waited a loooong time for this knife. Great story about how it came about.

Try an ESEE Izula 2 for animal processing, as well as the 3 or 4, well within your price range and best warranty in the biz. Great folks to deal with, great product. you wont be dissapointed. The 3 is perfect for me.

Welcome to the forum . Maybe a bit more information would help . Are you looking for a big , medium or small knife ? Do you have large or small hands ? Will it do more skinning or wood processing ?

HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH THIS !

CS Master Hunter...you can get it with a gut hook if you want. Its a decent knife but it isnt too expensive not bad in VG-1 and handle is still grippy when wet or bloody. The steel wont rust easy either. It is 4.5" with a decent sheath. Street price is 70-80 bucks. I would also strongly consider a falkniven S1. 5" VG10, minimalist sheath great grip a little longer, stainless so it wont rust easy. And under 150. I have a man-crush on falknivens! My A1 is amazing but it is 6" and pushes what I like to carry in the woods. I feel too many people carry too big of a knife for camping and all too often like to chop with them. I have done this for a few years now and dont like too long of a knife for they arent great a smaller finer task...just my opinion and I have camped with my ESEE Junglas once and I will not do it again! It was too big and clumsy to do anything other than chopping...which spent too many calories and was harder then I thought. I take a saw with now and cut with it and use my 5-6" knifes to baton with. Sven Saw or Sawvivor are easier on camping trips and take less energy to get things done. Ok...thats my 2 cents on camping back to hunting. I recommended the Master hunter for a few reason...if you process meat (animals) it is the right fit for the blade is thick but not too thick and the gut hook can make things easier...you either lover a gut hook or not. Makes skinning easier and faster. I also like the master hunter because you can do some light wood with it...not much but some so if you had to take one knife this isnt bad...although I think the S1 is better it doesnt have a gut hook...but the gut hook would break if you baton with it. The master hunter comes with or without the gut hook. I am giving you a one knife solution with is hard but possible. The S1 or Masterhunter would work and cover both hunting and camping well. But your post does lack some info...when you say hunting...are you actually going to hunt with it...like wild boar or are you processing game? If all you want is to process game a mora is my favorite...thing ultra sharp and cheap so if you break it who cares! But need more info...I shared my hunting and why I picked those other knives for camping. Let us know more.

depending how big of a blade you want, check out the the ESEE 4 or 6.

what are you using to sharpen your knives?

swamp rat ratmandu, they're back in stock, good enough for almost anything you would need in a hunting/survival blade. It will hold a better edge than almost anything else mentioned, and also tougher than most.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'm really looking for a 4" or so blade, something that is more for processing deer sized game. I want it sturdy enough to double as a survival knife. I'll have to look at the Esee 4" maybe.

I second the new Ka Bar Mark 1 Navy knife. The 5.25" blade is not too large for deer dressing and not too small for a survival knife. Look at the model with the Kraton handle. It also has a strong tang design.

Check out ML knives, he makes a great camp and field knife(AA2) for about 100.00 or one of his Kephardts, they are 1095 carbon steel so you would need to watch for rust and take care of it.

I too have a Cold Steel Master Hunter without the gut hook. Decent lamented steel for a reasonable price, mine was $75. Great, comfortable, grippy handle. Good edge holding while not being prone to breaking due to the softer steel surrounding the VG1 steel. A bit thick for smaller chores, nearly a 1/4" thick I believe, someone may know the actual thickness. Overall a solid value without that strange Cold Steel tacticalness feel. Just a good knife overall.

Can't go wrong with an ESEE either, nor a Becker but I wouldn't trade my Master Hunter for much else.
